Like many on here I'm sure we have pet insurance for our pooch (only purchased after the first huge vet bill of course). Our boy is a few months off 5 years old and has been covered for the last 3.5 years or so with PetPlan. We've made a few claims over the years, usually around the $300-400 mark which have always been accepted and eventually paid out. Last insurance years premiums were $43.90 per month so PetPlan are well and truly up on us so far (Oct 2016 - Oct 2017).

Checking the CC transaction list for the month and I noted that they had taken $74.83 out for this months dues, a 70.45% increase... a call to my wife and she found an email in her junk mail folder from them two weeks ago along the usual lines of 'we aim to keep costs down but as pets are living longer and expenses are rising we are having to increase our dues a bit' - the standard fair. The email is the only communication that we've received from them this year. No letter. No follow up emails. Nothing bar a single email that landed in Hotmail's Junk Folder.

Am I being too harsh here to say that this is pretty darned poor? Every other insurance we have sends letters with each policy change well in advanced. I don't know who provides their SMTP service but if they can't get a simple policy update email through to Hotmail for an Insurance company then they need to find a new provider. I run a small mail server (which I've recently switched to a new IP) and even I can get emails through to Hotmail 99.9% of the time.

I'd love to know their justification for a 70% increase.

We are cancelling our policy today and may look at taking up coverage with another provider. Otherwise the $74.83 will be put into a separate account each month as we'll self insure.

Anyone else seen such a large increase with PetPlan this year?

A facebook group I am in have been complaining about this too.  They have all switched to Southern Cross pet insurance after the large premium rises on Pet Plan this year.

Southern Cross certainly looks more reasonable with a similar level of coverage. I seem to remember hearing that PetPlan were the biggest provider in NZ not that long ago, they obviously want to change that.

We received the same notification and we are also going to head to Sthn X.

It's a massive increase and we haven't yet claimed in the year they've been covering us, so it's just not justified for us.

If in doubt blame the under-writers.

I have two dogs, both purebred large breed dogs. They ere both astound the $800-900 mark to insure for a year on pet plans $15K plan. On the same plans they are now over $1300 each, as a result one who's insurance has just expired is being moved to Southern cross and the other will be moved when his insurance is due for renewal.

I use to be insured with SC when it was EllenCo but move away due to price increases although I always found their claims process much easier than Petplans.

One other thing to note is with Petplan if you claim over a certain amount over the year upon your next renewal they add a $100 component onto your policy, they did explain this but i can't remember what it was called.

Long story short PetPlan have shot themselves in the foot and will be losing a lot of business.

Edit : compatible plan one Southerncross is $1099, I thought it was worth mentioning that

I've looked at pet insurance, but decided to go with putting an amount aside for Cat Maintenance.  No excess, no admin fees, earns paltry interest and doesn't disappear at the end of the year.

I have pet plan and my cat is currently at http://www.arcvets.co.nz/ after an initial treatment by our local vet, I haven't filed the claim yet but I think the bill is already over $4k. I had been considering a change as it was $21.91 for years and then in may this year went up to $31.74 which is a good 50% increase. I'm hoping that the policy will at least pay out for what has happened.

Good luck with your Cat @fizzychicken. Pet insurance is like any other insurance, great if you need to claim against it, a waste otherwise. It's a gamble for sure, but at an increase of 50-70% the odds are now way to far in favour of the house. @geoffwnz has the right idea but there is certainly a risk with self insurance when the bills get to the level of fizzychickens. Looks like we'll be moving to SX for now.

I used to have pet insurance, but now the cover is pitiful.

Southern Cross for instance stop at 7 years for a cat. Seriously?
Mine are both 16 now and friends cat 18.

Come on.....it's like insuring people until they're 40.

I self insure for pets by putting money aside that I would have paid on insurance. Also if the companies are only insuring them during their most healthy age range, IMO that is a bit off.

No change to ours yet. $43.90 on 25th October. Will keep a close eye on it. (No email yet either).

Not sure if that is completely correct, their Accipet appear to be open to all (from their web page https://www.southerncrosspet.co.nz/For-cats ) and the full coverage as long as you start before 6 years

from their policy doc:

2. Eligibility, cover and benefits
(a) Eligibility for cover
To be eligible for cover your pet must be between 8 weeks and 6
years (inclusive) of age on the policy start date. Pets over 6 years
of age will not qualify for accidental injury and illness cover where
cover with us has not been continuous (for example if there has
been a break, lapse or change in the level of cover).

The interesting bit is the last bit "or change in cover" ie if you move between plans after 6yrs old it looks like you are not covered

So I couldn't get cover on my 8 year old cat anyway based on that eligibility criteria.
