I purchased an American branded bbq in 2006 for around 2.4k.

 

It came with a lifetime warranty on the Aluminium firebox, The lower half of the firebox (hooded) has now softened and bowed and will not support the cooking grids for cooking. 

 

 

 

The local retailer that sold it to me no longer sell my brand as they have moved to webbers. 

 

 

 

I have mailed the nz agent through their web page, No response, I have now messaged them through FB asking how to proceed. currently awaiting a response. 

 

 

 

Due to the time frame, I no longer have my original receipt, but I have all the manuals that state the lifetime warranty of the firebox. other parts are 2-5years. 

 

Bbq has its own serial number which manufacturer will be able to trace to the retailer I purchased from, Is my lack of proof of purchase a big deal. 

 

I have read there is no reference in the act to proof of purchase. Is this the case.

It would pay seek advice from comm comm but my understanding is that the store that sold you the BBQ are still required under the CGA to manage your claim even though they no longer sell the product.

Agreed, your retailer is required to resolve this for you. Go back to them and save yourself the headache. 

 

Remind them of their obligations under the CGA. 

 

Comparatively, my weber I spent $300 bought through someone on TM (new) has had 2 repairs paid for and handled by weber and I have been amazed at their support. Nothing is too much trouble or hassle, and they just want happy customers. 

 

Neither issue I expected to be covered by warranty given it's age (5 years) and what I paid.

No, the layers are the same. The retailer is responsible, end of story. Give them a call, ask for the manager, *politely* but firmly ask they put it right, if they try and fob you off to the manafacturer, remind them that under the CGA they are responsible and it's their choice if they wish to involve the manufacturer, but you will deal only with the retailer.

Lifetime of the product, not the customer.

 

Hence i'd imagine if its not manufactured anymore its out of warranty. The retailer might be feeling nice however?

 

I think 12 years is a good run. Well done.

Excluding the lower front part of the firebox (alloy has softened and won't hold the grids up, alloy on the rest is as good as the day I bought it). 

 

 

 

I notice the wording of the current model is "Limited Lifetime Warranty" with no description of the Limited. 

 

The description in my 05/6 manual is lifetime excluding the paint, cheaper models in the range are specified as 10years 

 

 

 

And if financial circumstances were different I would buy another new, 

 

 

 

Edit: The Nz Agent has contacted me, suggesting I take photos into the store it was purchased from or they can lodge it for me, 

 

However, they are now asking for proof of purchase. I am the original purchaser and have all my manuals but do not possess my receipt.

Reminds me of a work Xmas do where the managers did the cooking. Anyone behind the bbq could see the raging fat fire inside it but the cooks wouldn't listen until the knobs on the front melted.

Worst case how difficult would it be to add a piece of angle to support the plates? Does the unit look obviously stuffed?

The front is visibly bowed and its stepped so angle iron or a brace would need to be profiled, 

 

And if you get the grids up at the start they will slip down during cooking, 

 

The rest of the bbq is original, cast grids and with a good scrub has aged really well

Upon thinking about this, I would say if it were me, on top of the contact at the retailer which I would do today, I would contact the US HQ and ask them for more detail on the lifetime warranty and where if the warranty doesn't apply, you can get replacement parts in New Zealand. 

 

12 Years is probably heading toward what I'd consider reasonable for a BBQ of that age. We have a 3K fridge which we are struggling to get 10 years out of. Manafacturer has pretty much stated that rather than spend $500 fixing it, they are prepared to go to DT to get a ruling.

If you let me know the manufacturer or model I can find you a definition of the lifetime warranty and contact details for the US if you want to go down that route.

Normally I wouldnt pursue something like this but the lifetime warranty on the box was the deciding factor against buying a cheaper not cast firebox bbq which would not have had this problem but would have had others. but were significantly cheaper.

 

Imagine if they had specified lifetime warranty on the part that failed on your fridge, it would be hard to walk away from
