Posted previously on another forum. Bought a Synology Nas just over 3 years ago - 1815+. It had a standard 3 year warranty at the time. Reading online Synology also extended the warranty on that machine to 4 years given problems with the intel atom processor.

So 1 week after the 3 year period expired, it died and wouldn't power on. The retailer in Auckland agreed to the remedy under warranty (good on them) and said they would work with their supplier on the repair. $70 later it was couriered off to them.

My 'repaired' unit arrived at the weekend.  Different unit to the one i sent - different serial number.  Has physical damage on the unit. Is full of dust inside the HDD bays and the fans are coated thickly with dust as well. It is obviously a machine that has seen lots of service and is 2nd hand.  Interestingly enough there was also a 'refurbed' 2TB drive in the box as well. No idea why - Possible sweetener?

I have rejected it as not suitable. I have no idea the history of the replacement unit and had expected my original machine to be repaired, refunded or replaced. They chose replace which I did not realize meant a 2nd hand unit. It wasn't even a refurbished unit. Just looked like it had been grabbed from an old returned stockpile and thrown into a box.

I'm awaiting retailer response. If it progresses to a dispute and I lodge in Christchurch where i live, does that mean the actual tribunal will be down here also ?

Thanks for the help

Ged

That is really shoddy treatment. Refund or your old machine repaired.

Also, claim the $70 postage and any other costs.

This is a bad outcome. Imo as soon as you let them know it will be sorted with an alternative not long after.

I don't think the problem is that they've supplied you with a replacement second-hand unit, rather the condition that unit's in. I think a refurb unit that had been fully cleaned, in good cosmetic condition and had been fully assessed with any questionable components replaced could be an acceptable replacement (as I don't think it's reasonable to automatically assume they will swap out a three-year-old NAS with a brand-new one).

But that's clearly not what you've received, so I certainly agree you should push them to improve on that outcome. Good luck with it, and please report back here once you've got an outcome.

Anything on the HDD ? If still full of data, could also give them the privacy line as well......

So. The retailer has been very responsive. They were surprised to hear about the issue and spoke to their repairer - credit to them.

The repairer responded by saying the fault in my unit was on the motherboard - so they replaced that part only and nothing else. I quote "They had replaced the PCB only and left all other parts in the same condition.'

I've had a look at the machine and the serial number is a sticker on the back plate that is in no way connected to any PCB's or other parts.   It doesn't appear to have been pulled off something else and the restuck onto this as they generally never look the same. It appears to have been there since day dot.

So the repairer has indicated it's my unit with a different motherboard and that is why the serial no is no longer the same. So..do they have a stock of new serial number stickers ?  I have no idea how the repair agent would work.

OR it's still a different unit after all.

In regards to one of your questions, the Disputes Tribunal hearing will be at the courthouse you lodge the complaint at. I had my own one last year, the guy was in Auckland and I was in Otago, he dialed in from the courthouse nearest him. He was given a private room to sit and listen/talk from. It was only over audio, no video. Good luck getting your problem resolved!

Thanks all. The retailer have been liaising with the repairer. To close this off it would appear the repairer has a number of new SN stickers they apply when the motherboard is swapped out. I have been sent a photo of them.   So, other than the case accumulating a scratch and an inordinate amount of dust ( I blew it out prior to sending ) it would appear for all purposes to be my unit.

First time I’ve ever known a products SN to be swapped but you live and learn.  Thanks for the feedback.

Id probably drop Synology an email anyway and ask if this is standard practise for them... if you contacted Synology directly with this "new" serial number, would they acknowledge it.
