Just wondering if anyone has any opinions on the best first aid course to do? I like the look of the Red Cross comprehensive first aid one.

Am thinking about doing some volunteering with Red Cross / St John’s.

The 2 day Comprehensive First Aid courses offer a lot more than your standard workplace first aid course and i would highly recommend you do one every couple of years, or do the refresher.

I’m after the best course NZ has to offer. So not work place specific. I think it’s something that can come in handy when you least expect it and where you least expect it.

I preferred the look of it compared to the St John’s offerings. But I don’t know all the providers.

Why did you choose St John’s over other providers? At first glance I noticed they’re a tad cheaper.

I support this from Jase2985,  as OP wants this personally.
Work pays for my refresher at Hato Hone for the last couple of years.  I do the online one and attend the afternoon session.

Have been to the Red Cross for only 1 training session a while back (closer to my workplace at that time) and really cant remember it being that different

unless you have tried a few different courses how do you know its the best? The comprehensive one teaches 3x unit standards, where as the full one only teaches 2.

over and above that your looking into specialised first aid type stuff.

I was only after peoples opinions. I'm aware it may not be factual but people usually have their reasons for choosing their courses and sometimes may end up on courses by different providers.

From what I can see the Red Cross course looks more comprehensive and cheaper than the St John equivalent.

I have always done the Red Cross courses and found them to be good. I kind of object to supporting St John given their untenable, charitable, position.

The best in what way? Any of the normal basic ones will be fine. If you want to take it further, Pre hospital admission advanced courses are available which cover a lot more. You need to have done the basic one first.

I use Red Cross.

all they teach to unit standard, and that means its prescribed content so they should all be very similar if they are teaching the same unit standards.

PHEC (Pre-Hospital Emergency Care) is the next step up from your "standard" first aid course.

Mileage will vary between the providers as to exactly what is covered but if you read up on the NZQA Unit Standards they cover, that is your base.

Additional skills include advanced airway management (OPA inserting, bag-masking, O2 supply etc), scene management, note taking, patient handover etc.

Definitely a step up and a lot of info to cover but well worth it.
