I'm wanting to get hold of some bamboo, preferably free or cheap.

Does anyone know of a place in Auckland where it grows where I'd be able to take it from? Or else does anyone know where I could buy it from cheaply.

Yeah, theres a Kendo club, but they don't often use actual Katana, so I don't know if they would have any.

Its a shame theres no Kenjutsu clubs in Auckland that I'm aware of. They'd have tonnes of the stuff :( Of course, theres the possibility that an Iaido club would, although they typically use blunt Katana...

Do you want living bamboo or just bamboo stakes?

You will probably only find small ornamental bamboos for sale alive as many are considered noxious plants. Youd have to take some from a park as suggested if you wanted bigger stuff

As for stakes, a garden centre will sell them but for a premium. I know there is a large inporter of dried bamboo as a while ago everywhere was out of stock and all said they were waiting on a supplier who gets it in from China.

You could talk to a company that does bamboo flooring as they are obviously bringing it in but it might not be suitable for what you want.

Can you say what it is for?

that will be hard to find if u want it for cutting.

if you just want to look cool, corn stalks work really well :)

Otherwise, maybe someone from the kendo or iado clubs can recommend a substitute for bamboo.

There is plenty of bamboo down Exhibition drive, which goes roughly from Titirangi to Laingholm. All growing and ranges from small to big massive stuff. Its a weed so no problems if you cut it down.
