I was just quoted $477 to fix 4 buttons ($23 each) that fell out and a latch to secure the door with call out and labour. The machine cost about $1000 when bought 6 yrs ago and the equivalent today $1300. I had a previous repair costing me $250 (from memory) fornthe bottom spreader.

So if I pay these tools $477, I am halfway to a new dishwasher.... I don't thibk so.

The clever on3s out there would have gathered by now I am looking to replace it with another brand.

What would you recommend?

Cut your losses and get Another brand.

Both modern appliances I have owned from f&p have had issues within 2 years, yet amusingly the Samsung and Panasonic appliances I have owned for longer periods have run without a hitch. Even the cheap branded Acqua vertical freezer we bought took 5 years till it had an issue. Modern f&p appliances are garbage

also had no issues with Westinghouse and Bosch

Seems you have come to your own conclusion...

To be fair to the 'Tools", you called them, they have costs to cover. If you know the value of the replacement parts, why not change them yourself?

Bosch service is pretty good. From memory you pay $100 + GST for a callout, then you pay for parts and time. If they have to come back again for the same thing there's no call-out fee. Our Bosch dishwasher lasted about 12 years, though it needed repairs three times in that period. Once was a door handle replacement, once was something to do with a pump seal, once I replaced the ropes that helped the door close myself.

Sad it’s better to buy new , our Bosch crapped out after 5 years , 800 to fix for an heating issue , $900 for a new fisher and Pykle . We went with purchasing the new one

I bought a very expensive stainless steel Westinghouse fridge/freezer which went great for about 5 years then just died. Called a serviceman out and he spent 10 minutes looking at it and told me it was terminal and could not be repaired - or at least not economically.

Having spent (aka wasted) thousands of dollars on what I thought was a quality brand new fridge/freezer, I reverted to my previous form - I picked up a 2 year old Mitsubishi fridge/freezer on a $1 reserve Trademe auction without looking at it. From memory it was around $250 and has a vege crisper drawer and a semi automatic ice maker that gets a lot of use (fill the reservoir, it makes ice and dumps it in a special tray in the freezer, automatically filling the tray with new ice again as it gets used).

That was 12 years ago, it's now 14 years old and still going strong. I literally just cracked one of the shelves this week and this post prompted me to search for a replacement tonight. They make it easy to find spare parts by placing the model/serial number & build date sticker (AND wiring diagram) inside their fridges at eye level - some might say that's not very aesthetically pleasing but I say it's brilliant!

And what do you know - Mitsubishi Electric NZ has a replacement shelf for my 14 year old fridge in stock ready to ship for less than $40 delivered.

I don't know if Mitsubishi do dishwashers, but if they did (and I needed one), I'd definitely buy one without hesitation....

I am dreading the day the dishwasher dies because I would want to replace it with something else, but it's a single dishdrawer and I highly doubt I could buy anything else that would fit the space.

I’d pull the parts off a donor one and repair it myself.

Have never personally had a problem with an FP appliance other than age based wear and tear but I am biased by a long term commercial connection with them.

As they have local design knowledge, their own service network (Auckland) and good spare parts inventory I’m unlikely to go elsewhere.

It would depend on how it was built into the cabinets. When my wife's was still working her office Dishdrawer failed and they bought a standard dishwasher. I removed the large storage drawer that was under the F&P to make room for it. That drawer came home and was incorporated into a plinth to lift our front loading washing machine off the floor.

I’m old enough to remember when there was no alternative to a F&P appliance, Boeings never fell out of the sky and Cadbury was the last word in chocolate.

Ps. If the question today is dishwasher, the answer is Bosch. Our Bosch series 6 died last week after approx 15 years. New Bosch series 6 installed this week.

this has been an issue in the appliance world for a very long time.

mass production means the buy cost has come way down but repair costs don't come down to match. if the appliance was 1980's prices, $500 to repair would be considered more than well worth it.

I really hope I have better luck just swapped out from Bosch to f and P

We had a Bosch dishwasher I loved, and when it died, we replaced it with a F&P. Didn't have the budget for another Bosch.

It is by far the most god awful piece of hot garbage I have ever purchased. The cutlery basket holes are so big that knives etc often slip through and block the spinning wash head. The racks fall off the rail if you look at it slightly funny. It's so bad at cleaning that I sometimes do it manually instead. The people that designed it can't have ever tested it before they let it ship.

I didn't realise how BAD a dishwasher could be until I bought this thing. God I hate it so much.

Sorry this is quite an off topic rant but God I hate that thing so much. I'm going to go and punch it again now.
