I've been volunteering with truenet for a while now and have noticed many issues with the test unit,

Flakey wifi, random unresponsiveness, occasional non-routing of local connections.

Also, random iprange changes(which breaks the network on devices assigned static ips).

How is the experiance for other volunteers?
I'm about ready to ship the unit back.

Honestly, it wouldn't be hard to implement a stable router.
I have tomato running on an old belkin router that never misses a beat(unless it's tasked with dlna sharing), so I see no reason they cannot get these devices to work flawlessly.

So plug it into your switch/router "behind" it, so it's not acting as a router/bridge.

This. I have one here plugged to my Cisco router and it is used for the purposes of testing only, nothing else.

I've been using TrueNet router for a few month. Only thing I noticed when I use Skype after 20-30 minutes I am disconnected from internet I have to re-launch Skype or even reboot the whole computer. It is quite annoying, specially when talking with the family oversees. But I am not sure what is causing it. I'm not blaming TrueNet router but started since I have the router connected to my network. I am also quite close to the street cabinet (approx. 500m), this might cause it as well. Not sure.
Also the router has normally two green lights on but sometimes they turn to orange. Don't know whether this is normal or not.

Hi, as others have said your Truenet device should simply be a device downstream of your normal router, not "the" NAT router if you have something better. I suggest you reinstate your Tomato and just put the truenet router as a LAN device downstream of that.

I had similar issues putting mine between modem / firewall but works fine hanging off as a node from the LAN as others have said.

Wifi was extremely flakey tho.

The thing is, if you don't have the device between your modem and the devices that are accessing the net, it has no way of knowing when to test.

Like it shouldn't bother testing if I'm already moving 10 mbits over it as the test will not reflect the actual speed.

So if I were to place it at a user device end of the network, the testing would be inaccurate.
I take it some of you have already resorted to this so you can at least provide some testing data without the unit screwing with connectivity :(

Sure, but OTOH the device would have to be a very high end one to provide you trouble free traffic of packets. As it is now the device may not move packets fast enough for some people (on a 100 Mbps connection for example that device would slow down my network to a crawl) so the only alternative is really to use it as another device on the network.

For some people the Truenet device is actually an improvement though.

@freitasm is a special case, we only use his data for comparison work, because he has a 100Mb/s service and the router is only able to pass about 60Mb/s. We recently sourced a better router - the D-Link 825, but it could not take the software due to a hardware change - without a major rewrite.

We are still looking for a suitable alternative for the small number of 100Mb/s volunteers connected.

@lostangel is correct, on ADSL or 15Mb/s cable, it needs to be between your LAN and WAN with a router between it and the modem to issue DHCP, otherwise it will not get a fair reading and will compete with you for resources, neither situations good.

The issues suggested here sound like faults on the specific router because we have 400 of these in use and most just tick along, unless unplugged.

I have one also which I often swear is causing problems, but have always found it to be my own fault on settings elsewhere in my network, I have never proven a fault apart from a period where it was covered and getting too hot.
