Hi all, this is my first post at geekzone so hopefully I can explain things well.

I have relocated recently from Glenfield to Chatswood (both of them are north shore suburbs). Ever since I moved, the download speed dropped from 10Mbps+ to less than 5Mbps. 

I called Vodafone few times trying to resolve this issue. After few attempts and a chorus technician visit, I was told that the maximum speed I can get for my address is 5Mbps, since my house is connected directly to the exchange which is more than 2.0kms away.

I was also told that If I were connected through a cabinet, the speed could be improved significantly.  Unfortunately, vodafone said they are unable to connect me  through the cabinet.  

This sounds a bit odd to me as I thought the switch between exchange and cabinet could be done easily by sending a technician to switch the connection.  I then did some research and someone mentioned that I should request vodafone to switch me from their red zone network (LLU) to the telecom wholesale network (UBA)  

Is this the right path I should be following? or how do I get vodafone to do this?

All the tips/comments will be much appreciated.

Put your address into http://bcc.telecomwholesale.co.nz and see what it returns under "ADSL2+ Details" on the right.

If your proerty is fed from a cabinet but your DSL is via ULL from the exchange then you will be suffering midspan injection and moving to a wholesale connection from the cabinet is the solution.

I would be surprised however that Vodafone would hook up a new connection this way unless you're somehow on a legacy ULL plan that you didn't want to move from.

It's also possible that this isn't the issue, and that your house wiring is the cause of your speed issues. If you post the DSL diagnostics page from your modem here complete with sync stats, attenuation and SNR it'll help a lot as it shows everything relating to your connection.

There should be no reason why you can't be connected to a wholesale cabinet, PM me your Vodafone account user name please

Can you also please post your modem stats here in Geekzone

Thanks sbiddle, I'm not at home so cannot run DSL diagnostics page but could you advise the webpage for the test anyway? Is it speedtest.net ? I will post the modem stats once I get home.
The address I used to stay in Glenfield is in the VDSL2 zone according to the chorus network availability website. That's all the information I know....

john, I've pm my account name to you hopefully there's some hint there.....

The diagnostics are in your modem. Since I don't know what type of modem you have I can't tell you how to view them but every modem has a status page somewhere.

Is that all it says? There should be a section called "ADSL2+ Details" below the information that you pasted. For example, I get this:

You need to tell us what it says in the ADSL2+ field below this. It will either say Exchange / Birkenhead or will say the cabinet details.

If you are connected to the exchange and not via a cabinet your speeds are probably being affected by poor internal wiring in your house. For optimal performance from ADSL2+ a master filter is essential.

OK, you're not on a cabinet because there isn't one. As Steve says, it's most likely an issue with your wiring.

Hmmm, the strange part is that vodafone sent out an technician and apparently the technician said something like 'the maximum speed for the address is 6.xx Mbps due to the distance to the exchange' on his site visit note and on my account note. That's what vodafone told me and also confirmed the main issue is my house is distant from the exchange.....

Confused...

Distance from your exchange is the issue - but the impact your internal phone wiring has on the DSL signal is an unknown.

Without me spending 30 mins writing why it's the case, to sum it up line attenuation ultimately dictates your DSL speed. The greater your distance from the ISAM/DSLAM, the higher your attenuation will be, and the slower your DSL will be.

Home wiring with multiple jackpoints causes reflections on the line which impacts sync speed. Old, dodgy or corroded connections, cabling or jackpoints will also affect your attenuation and sync speed.

Based upon what you've said so far it's unlikely you're going to get ~18Mbps (but we don't know since none of us know your address), a properly installed master filter can easily make a significant difference to low sync speeds.

Distance and wiring. See the above posts which ask you to check your house wiring i.e.

1) Do you have a master filter installed
2) Are you sure your house wiring is in near perfect condition
3) Please post the modem stats from the modem stats page of your modem (if your not sure how to find an online copy of the manual for your modem and you will find out how to access the modem settings webpage).


Although the 'main' issue could be the distance, you might be able to reduce this issue slightly by ensuring your wiring etc is ok.

Edit: Did the techs who visited check your incomming line i.e. the small box on the side of your house.
