Hey, I'm moving into a new flat in Christchurch and am looking at different internet plans. There is three of us, me, my girlfriend and a mate, and we will mainly being using internet for streaming and downloading tv and games.
I've been looking at different plans and am not sure what to pick. We will probably only be living there for around 10 months, so unless we get a contract that allows us to move we would rather not be on a 12 month contract so we don't have to pay a termination fee at the same time we have to pay bond for a new place. Also we need to rent a modem and avoiding set up costs would be great.

Only ADSL2 internet is available at the flat and it is a loft apartment, the upstairs section of a house. We've asked the property manager and don't know what the wiring situation is, but my girlfriends seen the flat (I'm in Wellington until the 10th) and says there are two phone jacks there, but we haven't been given a phone number either.

What would you guys recommend as a good plan? I'm leaning towards Orcon because they come with a free move as part of the plan.

Thanks a lot

My 2c

Personally I love SNAP, they're based in CHCH, they are fast, decent plans/pricing, but they are particularly awesome at service/support, CHCH based helpdesk that knows their stuff, active here on Geekzone & Twitter

Maybe bigpipe (unlimted, no contract) if you can get onto their trial.

Get a modem off TM or PBTech, Go with Big pipe or another provider and cough up the $101.20 install and $52.10 install. Even then if you are with a provider under contract and 10 months in need to relocate they will just extend 12 months.

yep happy to get you on board with us.

No connection fee
Leave anytime
No data cap

Head to and see what you think of the plans.

You will need to BYO modem though. (you can get an ADSL2 modem off trademe for under $50 these days) and they most of them will work straight out of the box with no configuration needed.

We don't offer home wiring, so if you need that you would need to get someone else to do it (but most places don't need wiring unless they are brand new)

I actually just applied to you guys haha, it looks awesome. I might be able to swipe a modem off my dad so it should be fine, thanks

good stuff. If it's an older modem make sure it is ADSL2+  to get the most out of your connection.
If it was bought in the last 3 years or so, then it probably is, but a google search will tell you quickly enough.
