I found it interesting to compare our speeds to other countries internet, we don't seem to be that bad.

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

Wonder if the high rates for Telstraclear and Orcon have anything to do with the Steam Caches they used to have, or if it's just that they have a disproportionately large amount of customers on either UFB or Cable.
Seems likely to be the latter reason, since Snap also shows up as good.

hmmm why such a big disparity between telstra-clear and Vfone are they not one and the same and good to see Orcon doing well (YAY for my ISP) but I think those steam caches haven't worked right for a while now hence why they stopped zero rating steam data

At a network level, TCL and VF are still totally separate.
The TCL stats will likely represent the high proportion of cable customers on 15+Mbps speeds, whereas most other ISPs have majority DSL where average is around 10Mbps (bear in mind this isn't sync speed, it's actual throughput, so will also be impacted by things like wifi, multiple users in household etc)

Likewise, for Snap and Orcon, they were the first two large ISPs to do UFB, so will (presumably) have a higher proportion of customers downloading at 100MBps which would skew the results upwards.

Depends if vodafone have updated their apnic whois records and if the geolocation that steam are using has also been updated since.
I know up until a couple of years ago, some speedtest results were still showing ihug as the isp.

To add complexity, they also do not know the proportions of rural users on long lines. We don't get a very large rural component of volunteers such that we could predict market shares, but the vast majority of them are Vodafone or Spark suggesting this sample is going to be influenced by that.

As also said above, Wifi, Tethering, Cafe wifi, and mobile may all end up in this comparison, although it is a lot closer to the actuals we measure than that published by Akamai. The average is almost bang on.

yea wifi would have a huge impact on speeds. take these numbers with a grain of salt.

We haven't used the local Steam caches for a while now. They changed the underlying protocol to HTTP away from their proprietary protocol.

The speeds IMHO seem to reflect ISP's who have a higher proportion of higher speed access systems vs ADSL.

Whoops I should have said bang on for ADSL. We just published a comparison of NZ speeds using excellent market share data from Chorus for all but Cable and other LFC's which we estimated (yes guessed, but with some science :-)

We also gave a chart of the history of speeds over the last couple of years - all based on the market share data, i.e. we took our actual results for each technology and each ISP, and used weightings by ISP and technology to come to an average.

Here is our 9pm chart from the article above:

Note: We never publish actual DSL speeds because it is not possible to compare DSL by ISP when the results are also dependent on a weighting based on distance to the DSLAM. If we were to publish speeds then ISPs would be encouraged to reject customer applications that have long lines and could potentially reduce their "Speeds"

I wonder if that suggests one reason why Telecom and Vodafone speeds are low. Perhaps both wireless and wired connections are averaged together.
