I am hoping somebody can help me. For the last few years I have been running my communications through Vodafone's home phone wireless and for Broadband I have used 2 degrees Mobile Broadband. This has been adequate for my needs but owing to a change in circumstance I need to get Home Broadband installed. The issue I have is that the suppliers I have been to have been prepared to arrange what is necessary to make the copper lines active and are thus advising not to sign a broadband contract until I know the wires are active.

My question is how can I confirm the copper is active?

most suppliers would be willing to sort it for you.

It's possible there will be an extra fee for your property to get the copper hooked up if you don't know whether it has ever had a copper phone line before. (could be talking ~$200)

An alternative would be skinny broadband, which doesn't require copper.

Quic Broadband

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Thanks for your reply. I have had copper in the house but it would be 7 years since it was used. I was certainly expecting an extra fee for this. The problem is that providers do not seem able to sort it. Currently I have spoken to Spark who said talk to Chorus and 2 degrees who suggested I contact an electrician.
I am aware of the Skinny and Spark wireless offerings and they are my fall back position. With these I am concerned that 80GB might not be enough for streaming.

PS: You can get broadband without a contract from someone like Bigpipe. Because there is no contract, it means you have to pay for a connection fee (something like $49) and you need a modem, which they sell for $99 or you can buy somewhere else

However Bigpipe don't offer landlines which it sounds like you probably want a landline

Agree that HFC cable is not a good option at present.
