The Glenfield (Auckland North Shore)Telecom exchange has been upgraded and as a consequence everytime I have an overnight download Xtra terminate my connection. This has happened every week for the last 3.

On Friday the connection was terminated before midnight. I was unable to reach anyone for assistance. The assistance usually requires xtra to reset the ports on my Nokia M1122 modem from their end. This in the past has been done within 10 minutes of the call being made that I have no access. Not this time.

Call Saturday was told an engineer would contact me at 0930 Sunday. 0930 came and went with no contact. Re-called at 1400 and told I would be contacted at 1800. 1830 came about and I got to talk to a NZ based xtra engineer.

Apparently the hardware upgrade to the Glenfield exchange has a software bug that terminates connections that can be only reset by calling in. Xtra is aware of the problem and is working to fix it. Meanwhile I have to do the Phillipino helpdesk dance whenever this happens. I don't mind an offshore help desk but it would help if the quality of the line had the ability to allow me to hear what they were trying to say.

Now given that when my connection is live I get the blazing fast speed of 767kbps, I have a couple of questions:

Does anyone know if any other ISP has their own hardware in the Glenfield Exchange?(if so, who)
Will a change in modem make any difference to my adsl connection speed?

I don't really know the answer to yuor questions sorry, but I am on the Glenfield exchange with ihug and I don't have any problems.  If there was a problem with the exchange wouldn't everyone have it?  I get speeds of around 3Mbps usually.

I am under the impression that ihug does have their own equipment in the exchange, but it's only being tested at the moment.  I don't think I'm using that equipment.

But no one is using it at present are they?  Just staff etc?  I really wanted to get in on that action, but everytime I asked they said they'd let me know when it was available to the public.  And now I'm moving :(  Doesn't VF/ihug also have equipment in Browns Bay exchange?  I wonder when we'll get to use it?

On the other hand, if I was somehow switched to their equipment, that's a bit disappointing because I never got any better performance.

Screen capture from tonight. I'm in the Meadowood/Unsworth area. Any assistance would be gratefully appreciated in getting my speed up!

That was the ihug speedtest? You should check the adsl line rate if you are still in Glenfield, might be a dodgy line. Nokia M1122 routers had a known issue with the ADSL2+ equipment, but I heard a firmware upgrade was available for it somwhere.

Browns Bay connects to Mairangi Bay exchange? Not sure, but unbundling will take more time over there. Your speed problems would be unrelated to the ISP since it improved with a different modem. Hope you are not moving from one bad phone line to another!

Time to find a new industry!

Looks like you're right. I have a bad line:

Statistics Downstream Upstream
Line Rate 3327 Kbps 875 Kbps
Attainable Line Rate 4032 Kbps 848 Kbps
Noise Margin 5.9 dB 4.6 dB
Line Attenuation 64.0 dB 37.0 dB
Output Power 0.0 dBm 12.8 dBm

This is under the Orcon adsl2 connection. I take it nothing can be done to improve this?

64 dB indicates 4.5 km from exchange.

See http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?ForumId=49&TopicId=18320. DMT Tool should work with Dynalink. Post screenshot.
