Well after been looking through at some of the speeds people are getting and the ping i wonder do i really need to change isp to get better ping and speeds?

I am currently With Telecom Xtra i am on the Adeventure plan which has Fullspeed/128 and after reading up on interleaving and other things would it suit me to change to an isp that allows interleaving turned off ? or that does offer UBS (Unbundled BitStream )

Here is my Line Stats:

temDownstreamUpstreamUnit
SNR Margin19.531.0dB
Line Attenuation0.02.5dB
Loss of Signal00
CRC Errors20
Data Rate7616160Kbps
LatencyInterleavedInterleaved

I am currently on a D-link 504G and i am still on Adsl as my exchange won't have Adsl2+ for another year or so ( its only small ) I live 60 metres from the exchange.

After looking at some of the other isp's plans some are $$ and don't offer enough Bandwhich. As i am with Telecom i currently get it cheaper ( Thanks to some company discounts ). As does having a higher upload speed does that increase your ping to severs and allow you to download at a higher rate? As far as i know i can already achieve my max download rate at 760kbs

Here are some Speed tests:

LA

Thats what i normally get at any time of the day sometimes higher in Aussie

As i do remember having 79 ping To Aussie game severs ( Melb located ) over the years my ping has increased now i i just get under 100. Is it worth changing to another ISP just to get lower pings am i Garrunteed to get lower pings changing to another isp as i thinking either Orcon or Maxnet?

Cheers

I dream of that connection rate!

I get 1800 on a good day....and my ping has been up 400ms averaging 120~150 for months.

Had the provider and telle guys reconfiguring over and over but cant solve high latency...

[RANT ON]The network since alot of this ADSL2+ intergration has gone to pack...NZ doing stuff on the cheap again...[RANT off/]

I suspect the old basic NZ overload the exange and subscribers on one system trick.

...maybe we could get the GOV to buy the network back....give me fibre...then sell it back for aloss ofcourse...maybe even to me...

im being cynical

now I think you have nothing to worry about, just look at my attenuation to yours...omg.

Downstream Upstream

SNR Margin (dB): 16.6 31.0

Attenuation (dB): 58.5 31.5

WOW. 0db line attentuation? 19.5db SNR? You must live in the exchange right? Thats amazing.
Change isp right now imo, you're syncing at full speed and not even getting close to it in speedtests.

Xnet, Slingshot, Snap or Telstraclear are the best. Telstraclear gives amazing pings (i get 7 ping to auckland servers) but is expensive. Xnet is a good isp in general, cheap data. Slingshot has good QOS/prioritising and is fairly good. Snap has very good customer service and should be the No.1 choice if you live in the south island.

Regarding pings, getting interleaving off will decrease you ping by around 30. Changing off xtra should drop it another 10 maybe. So ping will decrease for sure.

Please don't go orcon, check out the 30 page complaints thread on this forum or on gameplanet. Maxnet is apparently good but quite expensive i think.

Can you please do this out of interest?
start > run > cmd.exe
type ping games1.gameplanet.net.nz
then ping ut2.rebellion.net.au

Heh well i know i can't complain with those line stats and i really do live next to the exchange ( 60 Meters ) could chuck a cat5e off the broadband port straight to my house

Well its a toss up between Xnet, Slingshot or Staying with Xtra  As i can't use datablocks well i can but my bill be $$$. Plus i know my way around getting Extra bandwhich with xtra ... :P

ping games1.gameplanet.net.nz =  Average 62

ping ut2.rebellion.net.au = Average 100

Pretty much get 100 to all Gamesevers in aussie like Game arena , 3Fl and Internode

If you are money conscious, Xnet then with managed data cap. Then you won't go over, and you will only pay for what you use up to the cap. No contract or tolls either, so you can switch out if it doesnt work out for you.

Regarding ping, i'm in hamilton, 3.5km from my exchange, telstraclear PDQ FS/FS, interleaving off.
ping games1.gameplanet.net.nz =  Average 15
ping ut2.rebellion.net.au = Average 54
During non peak i sometimes get 8 ping to gameplanet in game.

I switched from vodafone with interleaving where i got similar stats to you, maybe slightly less.

Ahh i see well i am currently in the south waikato off a rural exchange

Yer i thinking of going to xnet  fs/fs and managed usage but i think that will be in the future.. i see what telecom does  yet
as i am currently getting it basicly free.

I am pretty much keen for those lower pings as i see people joining severs with lower ping :(

As i can'r complain as many others don't have my sorta  stats or get good download speeds

Thanks for the info with laterlaving but one question does come to mind does having a higher upload speed allow you to get lower ping ?

Yes, moreso for international i noticed, but not that much, and sometimes higher download speed too, apparently 128k up will only get you 5mbit down due to the way that for every packet recieved you have to transmit an ack packet back, which is why some say that ADSL2+ 24mbit/128k is a joke. I think thats how it works anyway.
The biggest difference in full upload speed is multitasking, if im gaming and someone starts watching youtube, i used to start lagging. Now i can torrent +  game + watch youtube all at once with no lag.
We didnt think we'd need it, but now i'd never go back to 128k.

Perhaps the reason could be because he is on a FS-128kbps plan rather than a FS-FS plan!

This has nothing to do with the provider.

Ahh yes i use to be on fs/fs with Xtra that was awhile back before i knew anything to do with modems and like stats :(

5 meg? i am postive i can download over that like i said before i have download at 760kbs for a whole file ( 800 meg ) .  Mabey thats got to do with a ftp sever or multitread downloading ? idk

In future hopefully Xtra can offer better bandwhich or fs/fs then i can test and deside sooner!

Stats at peak time? ( 9:55 pm )

With line stats like those, you'll see a significant improvement if you switch to FS-FS. As previously discussed, if you have a FS-128kbps line, your performance will be limited significantly... this is not a ISP specific issue.

Ping/speeds do have a big impact based on provider. Just take a look at orcon, people are getting complete rubbish speeds. I get better peak speeds on Telstra than i did on vodafone. Some providers give better pings than others overall.
Plus xtra don't allow interleaving off.

ISP's dont change their plans all that often, and xtra changes theirs even less often, so you're going to be waiting a while.

pretty high attenuation there, if your house wiringis all good then its just distance.

Back on topic, interleaving corrects those CRC errors but you shouldnt get too many at your distance. However the improved latency is negligible unless you really use alot of realtime applications.

Time to find a new industry!

Gamimg is only the real factor as it will be nice to get lower pings to anywhere :D

As i will have to stay with Xtra for a bit longer but i think i move onto snap next not to sure

Interleaving off now means that i can play on west coast USA servers with only a slight bit of lag, where it used to be 200+ always, sometimes i can get one as low as 170. It also means that i can join a lot more RTS games and not be kicked for high ping. It also means that i can ping as low as 10 to auckland servers.

Hi exDee,
A very interesting read from your posts...thanks. I had probably the best ping of all NZ players in US Servers while gaming prior to April this year. This with Orcon and Interleaving turned off (which by the way is essential for gaming if you want low pings and low latency). I mostly used Servers based in Chicago USA. My ping prior to April this year was between 200ms - 210ms I was very happy with my ISP. Now Orcon has had all sorts of issues since April and my ping is anywhere between 228ms - 280ms. This is not the main problem...the main problem is the latency which is bad terrible latency you get when gaming. Not a steady flow of bandwidth makes it frustrating and at times impossible to play. This is where objects warp away from you or delayed response times from whats actually happening. Bandwidth stops and starts giving you pauses in real time. I guess its called bandwidth bursting which is not an even flow. Anyway that is the big problem gaming with Orcon at the moment. I'm now ready to move ISP's and exDee I'm very interested in your comments about TelstraClear as I live in Hamilton too. I need an ISP who does Home Phone Line/Tolls/Broadband MAX/MAX with Interleaving turned off and NO TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT! for uninterupted gaming. I have many family and friends also with Orcon who are ready for a new ISP for the same reasons. Which ISP is the best who can fulfil my needs like Orcon once used to? Which ISP wants me and my gaming friends?

Hey exDee,
I did this test for you too. I feel packet loss is possibly a problem too. An intermittent problem which could suggest my bandwidth is bursting (stoping and starting) when gaming causing the latency effect. Am I correct? I have a Dynalink ADSL RTA 1335 4 Port Modem... Would purchasing a newer modem help my situation. I'll try anything now.
