Hi there.

Our brand new house has no communication wiring outside. House is fully kitted out to ETP.

I am wondering who should be responsible for the wiring to roadside for coms cables, or if there are any regs in place that stipulate where street network is available, any new development must have cabling provided.

Who must do this if the latter applies? Is it the building company (who provided electrical subbies) or the developer, or??

Thanks kindly,

Alistair.

what area are you in? are you in an area where chorus says you should be able to get fiber? or are you in a new area which isnt covered?

There is no requirement for anyone to provide you with fiber as you can get broadband via 3/4G

IME the developer is usually required to arrange power and telecoms to the lot boundary as part of the consent.

This is what I had to do when I did a subdivision.

However, I am now living in a 16 lot subdivision of what was a farm and there is cable to an ETP on our house (which was built 5 years ago) but when I contacted Chorus and VF about broadband, they both said that service was unavailable within the subdivision so it is possible I suppose that the cabling exists in the subdivision but not in the public highway at the end of our private road and Chorus declined to install it there just to serve us (I would assume they had a statutory duty to do so as Telecom in the UK would but perhaps not).

It seems your situation might be similar since Chorus are responsible for lines up to the ETP I believe, so if you have one they ought to be the ones that put it there! Have you asked them?

Hi, I believe its a short fall of the developer, so are you saying none of those duplex's have copper running past them?

Cyril

Edit, looking at the Chorus map, it indicates copper on the road, but not up the private road to the set of five duplex's, so clearly the developer did not install cabling up the private road from the public, do you have a spade, if so, time to get sweaty.

Hi guys.

Cyril is there a way I can find out if its developer?. (If it is, then I will probably leave it, as he has had enough headaches).

I have all house plans wiring and so on, but not sure if external cabling is shown.

Answer other questions:

There is no fibre in area, but the street (Rea Road, Tahawai) has VDSL/copper cabling on roadside.

The villas where we live are a 150m drive off the roadside, and we have a recently in place a 100mm duct, with pull through to roadside.

At the other end of access lane, we did have multicore copper way back, but a digger broke through that (according to developer, prior to his arrival) and there has never been a connection via that end. If using that end, also, we would need a easement, as access is via another property, so the best way would be via the normal entrance-way via the new duct.

It would be nice if Chorus were responsible for lines up to ETP; they would connect roadside through duct, into distribution line behind villas, but we would have to be sure to go that route.

Someone will need to pay Chorus to get copper to the ETP and this is not going to be cheap! Chorus may not even do it, They could just say no way not going to happen

The Real estate agent that sold you the land should of advised what services are to the gate or did you even ask?

Hi, in a normal sub division it is totally the developer who is responsible for having the street cabling installed, the work is normally carried out by Chorus or a Chorus sub contractor and billed to the developer.

So this 100mm duct, does it go all the way up the private drive from rea rd past all the duplex's? and is it Chorus green duct? If so you are in a good place otherwise not so much.

So the Rea Rd service will be from the Eaton cabinet up on the corner of the main road and Tetley (outside the Laundromat) so you are more likely to get ADSL not VDSL as its around 1.8km so well over VDSL's reach.

You might be better off looking at a WISP, I see LightWire cover in your area.

Cyril

The duct was put in by the bodycorp. Thanks Cyril, if its not VDSL I will probably stick with 4g/Skinny $38/month unlimited slowly.

Thanks others for input on this thread.

Cheers,

Al.

Unlikely Skinny provide 4G service in area, I thought they covered metro areas only.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

Nah, I meant Skinny mobile/hotspot slow as an old boot, but OK for email and poor quality videos.

As a result of this, 4g seems the only option so far Ive found most competitive are:

Wireless Nation $90, Trustpower $84, Netspeed (unknown yet). Need about 60Gb data.

Developer should have got infrastructure to run past the properties, subbies should have got services between the house and the street (usually -- they've obviously done power / water? assuming you don't have tanks for your main supply)
