Has anyone succesfully run their ONT off PoE?  I've got an "12V 2A" PoE splitter from AliExpress, but the ONT won't even power on with it.

(note: ONT is a Huawei, we are in a UFF/Tuatahi area)

Why - because you'll ask - the ONT is in the house, all the interesting IT gear is in the garage, I'd love to power the ONT off the same UPS as everything else.

I Doubt the ONT is designed to be powered from PoE, -

You could use a PoE splitter to power the ONT via its socket thou...

Sounds like that’s what the OP has except it’s from AliExpress.

Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.

Ahh yes, makes more sense now that I read it again....

I think the source of the problem is likely to be AXpress....

Does the OP have a multi meter to see if there is actually any volts on the power output of the splitter??

Yes, I have done a chorus one, mine is currently running on PoE. I use a TPLink TL-POE10R from PBTech (this comes with standard 2.1mm barrel jack cable), and a "300mm NBN/UFB Power Connection Cable" from Jaycar. I had to solder the cable together myself, and used a multimeter to confirm the pinout

Oh now that's a really good idea.  Should have thought of that before!

12v POE will drop in voltage over distance really quickly.
But I would expect you should be able to get 20 metres quite easily. Ive done this a couple of times with chorus type 300 ONTs that use a barrel jack but found you will also need to make sure that the POE Y injector and Y splitter are both gigabit capable otherwise it will only be 100mbit.

You can get more distance by using two cables and a soldering iron.
One cable carries the data, and the other cable carries the power - positive on the green12/blue45 pairs and negative on the orange36/brown78 pairs to half the resistance.

Alternatively you could use a standard gigabit 48v af or at POE injector and a gigabit 12v 1.5A splitter for a full 100 metre distance.

I am not sure what model ONT your local fiber co uses, but if its the same as a chorus type 100 I can confirm you need to be very careful about the polarity. If you connect them up with the +/- polarity around the wrong way, they will let a puff of smoke out and die. I have confirmed a pattern (at great cost)

I have been warned against using passive PoE injectors as they just shove the voltage down the wires without determining whether the receiving device is capable of handling it.

I would use a more reputable quality POE splitter like this TP-LINK one:

Buying a Constant Vigil Sentry Lite or Sentry Integrated might be easier: https://www.constantvigil.com/shop

BTW, my only connection to these guys is as a very happy customer

I was thinking to mention that.

Although..... using POE may give the option to remotely power cycle the ONT, if you have a managed POE switch with such functionality.
