Apologies if this has been asked and rehashed before but ...

Will I need to get a splitter installed with a St Johns Lifelink Medical Alert ?

See my flatmate has his elderly grandmother staying with him right now. They've had this medical alert thingy where she presses and holds a button on the keychain to get an ambulance out there. She's a hard case old lady so I don't want anything to happen to her.

Anyway they've got a St Johns officer out here testing when I notice my BB going down. Like not syncing with the exchange gone down.

This is how I had my filters setup before :

Main Jack Point->Double Adaptor->Filter->Phone
                        |-------10m extension reel->Filter->ADSL Modem

Symptoms :

ADSL Syncing
Internet working
Phone working

It was changed by the St Johns officer to :

Main Jack Point->Medical Alert->Double Adaptor->Filter->Phone
                                                |-------10m extension reel->Filter->ADSL Modem
Symptoms :

ADSL not Syncing
Internet not working
Phone working
Medical alert keychain button working
Ambu getting signals back at their base

I went out just now and changed it to :

Main Jack Point->Double Adaptor->Medical Alert->Filter->Phone                                   |-------10m extension reel->Filter->ADSL Modem
Symptoms :

ADSL SyncingInternet workingPhone workingKeychain button ??????Ambu getting signals back @ their base ????
The last scenario has me worried. Altough the internet and phone is all working , I'm a bit worried that the medical alert thingy may not be working :(
I just wanted some more information to back me up before I go talk to my flatmate (our relationship is a bit "estranged")

So to reiterate from above

Will I need to get a splitter installed with a St Johns Lifelink Medical Alert ?

Is it still arond $250 or so ?

Whats the usaull lead time for a non xtra customer ?

Yep - as far as I can recall from my Telecom days its pretty much the same as a monitored alarm so you would need a splitter - Easiest and cheapest would probably be to ring round some sparkies...

For billions of years since the outset of time, every single one of your ancestors survived, every single person on your Mum and Dads side, successfully looked after and passed onto you life.  What are the chances of that like?

The St John's Medic alert *may* work just fine with filters.  However, it's a critical life service.

It's not worth risking for the saving of a couple of hundred $.

I got a similar one for my grandfather and it had a base unit which sat next to his bed. It plugged in just like a normal telephone and therefore required a dsl filter, and the base unit plugged into the phone side of the filter.

Sorry if I understand your situation incorrectly but it seems you have everything setup wrong.

You should have the ADSL filter plugged in before the medical alarm.

If you have it setup like:

"Main Jack Point->Double Adaptor->Medical Alert->Filter->Phone|-------10m extension reel->Filter->ADSL Modem"

Then the medical alert is not going through the ADSL filter, which would cause problems with you broadband connection.

Also if you have the extension cable plugged into the ADSL filter, then most likely it is plugged into the phone port of that filter which would give you really bad sync rates, if at all.

I wouldn't recommend using the telephone extension cable as it also can cause bad sync rates, and or disconnections.

It is recommended to have the ADSL filter plugged in first, then the medical alarm and modem plugged directly into the filter.

If the computer is too far from the modem you

should use a longer Ethernet cable.

You also shouldn't have a filter in the line to the modem like you have - you can safely remove it.

yup it should be
ph jackpoint + double adaptor >>filter >>lifelink
>>extension cable >> adsl

the filters should inhibit the lifelink from phoning home they are only to stop cross talk between the voice and adsl or you could just call telecom and get them to send out a corus tech to install a main spliter

Yep I would also add another vote for a full splitter personally. It just isn't worth the splitter getting slightly unplugged etc.. I thought they were hard wired in as well.

The way those units work, is that they can seize the phone line bypassing an existing call (in case someone had a fall and knocked the phone off the hook etc).

Some Burglar alarms can do the same, for the same reason (you don't want your alarm not to call the security company when the burglar just took a phone off the hook).

Get a proper splitter - dont use filters in any situation where it starts to become critical having service.

Filters are unreliable little beasties in my experience.

P.S. do not filter your ADSL!!!!!! that will cause anything from trouble connecting, to poor speeds, to unreliability, to no service. Filters are ONLY for POTS devices (Phone, dialup modem, telephone line based medical alarms, fax, Sky decoder, etc)

What's the bet that the filter in question was being used merely as an RJ to BT adapter using the straight through port. Most modems probably don't come with a cord that will plug directly into a standard phone jack.

Its quite probable - but its not just for the OP, these things need to be drummed into the general public.

I know someone who ordered a new cable for their modem, because their Xtra single PC pack couldnt plug into the "phone" bit of the filter with the supplied cable!!

What makes me cry is that a helpdesk person probably stepped them through that too!

Eg someone sat on the end of the phone and told them to do that.

I used to advise everyone to unplug the modem completely then most of the modems have a separate "filter" for the DSL line, then it just makes it easier to say "Filter every device".

Then they can't plug the wrong device in cause of the difference between BT and RJ11 - but sounds like you found a customer that found a way!

Cheers,
