just wondering why the PDQ broadband that Telstra offers is faster
than Telecom's ADSL 1?
im on Telecom soon to be on Telstra as Telecom is just pathetic,
my friend is on Telstra's PDQ [which is still ADSL] and has a significantly
faster upload and download speed than mine and we live in the same area
although he lives in the hill of the suburb that i live in [5 min drive between us].

you will still be on telecoms lines and equipment, i highly doubt that your speed will increase, why not switch to a telecom adsl 2 plan?, what is your modems sync rate?

Edit: i assume it will be telecom wholesale as afaik telstra havnt got ucll available to customers yet?, and cable network isnt adsl.

Several things to look at:

Are you using a Full speed down - full speed upload plan? Or a full speed down - 128kbps upload plan (this may result in slightly slower download speeds)?

Are you using Go Large?

Have you checked the line speeds from your modem? This is particularly important as poor line speeds will slow your connection down, regardless of provider.

ufortunately im in an area which wont be upgraded with ADSL 2+ technology until 2011..
so i have to make the most out of ADSL 1 as i cannot get cabel either..

i have the new adsl 2+ wireless thompson modem that telecom offer; the TG585 v7 i believe.

i have tried everything [i think] with telecom. i am not capped on speeds just usage [10gb]
and have 4mb down and 550kb up...my friend that is 5 minz away is now on the PDQ max and has
6-7mb down and 750-900 kb up and every difference in speed matters as we both do a lil bit of online gaming.

in that case im 99.9% sure changing isp wont make any difference ... if you are five minutes drive away from him then 2meg difference sounds very typical.

well im not sure if this is 100% correct but i heard that telstra delivers its broadband on its
on lines which make it have less traffic? where as telecom shares with other ISPs?
and im not on a capped plan..max down and up

telstra uses telecoms switches at the exchange and their copper lines, the only posible difference is that telstra may use different international routing, but i doubt that your speeds are slower because telecoms routing is slowing you down otherwise it would be happening to other people.

Not true. Latency matters when gaming, not speed.

A game will only use 256kbps max (and that probably includes any VoIP traffic associated with the game). As long as that amount is available there will be very little difference between having that, and more bandwidth.

Also, it doesn't mean anything if your friend whose 5 mins away gets better speeds than you. He might be on a different DSLAM, a different cabinet, and he might only be 200 meters from either. Whereas you might be on crappy copper and 3km from the exchange.

There is no ISP that offers better contention ratios on Telecom. I have seen some circuits syncing at 22mbit pass data at 2.5MB/sec downstream for extended periods. I heavily doubt any other ISP could touch that QoS.

You also need to understand that any ADSL connection sold by any company travels over Telecom equipment and is passed to your ISP later in the network topography UNLESS that company has their own DSLAM installed in the exchange or cabinet nearest to you (e.g. Orcon+ network/Vodafone Red)

I still recommend you take my aforementioned advice and try the age old isolation test, the compare your sync speeds and maximum throughput rates. I think you'll find you don't have a lot to complain about.

I believe to host a decent game and to give everyone of the 6-18 people good connection
you need to have a high upload to cater their needs?

thanks for your [and everyone elses for that matter] help and i will take the advice given and do an isolation test and ring my ISP for further advice [although they're pretty useless over the phone]

Ah right, well I didn't realise you were hosting games.

If you're with Telecom there's a contact email address on the bottom of the post that you can use. Just remember to mention the fact you've already completed and isolation test to avoid duplicate troubleshooting.
