For the past 3 days there's been major work on the road outside put in some new water mains. Monday and Tuesday I noticed 2 Telecom Vans being out there and us having basically no phones all day so hence no broadband. This would be until 4pm on one day and 6/7ish on another day.

Our broadband would then go back up but when we picked up the phone there would like this sound like a ringing tone sound. Forgive me I've been on an overnight shift so I am just wanting to make this post quickly then go to bed. I'll clean it up later just wanting some of the fine regulars there to post some answers to my questions...

Namely

Do filters eventually fail ???

Whats it mean if I picked up my phone and there was a constant ringing tone at the other end ?

If it's a call diversion tone can you provide a link to the sound it makes so I can hear it and compare ?

What's it mean if you phones are dead with no dial tone but your broad band is working fine ?

I've used Telecom's service express and gone through to the Busy line check. It reports a fault on the line. If we don't have the Line maintenance fee  will this fault be able to be fixed for free if it's not within my property ?

KK Back to bed. Look forward to hearing some nice responses by some of the fine people especially cyril7 and maybe even NealR. Not sure about Neal answering since I'm with Orcon but he should be able to help on the fault side of thing :)

PS I work night shift for a major north island city council after hours teleoperator service. Which is why I should be in bed right now :)

PPS If I should be posting something in the Orcon forums let me know. I'm pretty sure I may need to. A 600-928 Kbps sync rate with line noise of 14.4DB and Atten of 35.0 Db shouldn't be normal right ?? Especially for being 850 m from the exchange. On G.Lite btw

Sounds like your line has been hooked up to a wrong pair or something similar.

Providing the issue is not inside your property you won't have to pay - wiring maintenance just covers inside your propoerty. Considering there has been work done it'd be safe to assume this is the cause of the issue.

Doesn't sound good.

Might pay to log a fault with the Orcon helpdesk.

Let me know if you have any issues.

With a serious drop in sync rate and high noise, yet still the DSL is working but POTs (Phone) is not, would probably indicate a leg missing (ie one wire of the pair is disconnect).

One thing with DSL is that is it sometimes (infact often) will work with one leg, as sounddude says register a fault, there is not a lot you can do it will require a tech to trace your line.

Might be on diversion.

Lift receiver, Dial 160 and then hang up.

Pick up receiver. Do you get normal Dial tone now?

Call whoever provides your phone service and log a fault.

We had this once after lightning took out thousands of phones in the Manawatu. It tool 12 weeks to get both phone and Internet back on, though the Internet came back on after 6 weeks so we used Skype.

In the end we had to write a letter to the Minister of Telecommunications (Cunliffe, at the time) and Telecom came out 2 days later and fixed it.

Seems the lightning had fried the little white plastic joining bits in the grey plastic Telecom access "penises" for about 3 km along SH1. If they had tested it 3 months earlier, we could have had our phones back in 2 hours....instead of 12 weeks.

So it will have something to do with the access junction at - or near - your house....or maybe someone messed up at the exchange. I've had them do this twice in the past 6 months - unplug my connection and plug it back in the wrong port - both times at 1am Saturday morning.

That's why I have a Broadband Pro SIM as 6GB of data backup for WHEN my phone line goes down. Not IF.

Alrighty !

Had a Chorus techy van turn up @ 12.05 pm today.

The opened something at the end of our drive where our water toby is. It had a bunch of wires inside I'm guessing it's like that little green box they were telling us about when I was training at Telecom. Gathers the phone wires for multiple houses except this one was underground. The wires inside looked just like the internals of the little green box they showed us in training.

Our phones are working ringing in and out. Our broadband is now back up to it's usual speed. :)

Now we just have to deal with the fact it was out for 4 days and incurring mobile forwarding charges  and a possible duplicate call out fee charge.

Duplicate because I raised a fault with Orcon at around 6pm last night but my flat mate raised a fault as well with Telecom (earlier one that day) and I have no idea whose fault got attended. Altough it was a Chorus van that attended I have no idea if that was a result of my ticket with Orcon or my flat mate's ticket with Telecom.

Either way I'm probably going to be paying either $120 or $80 when the second techy is sent  out. So either the first techie missed something that the second techy fixes or i'm going to be paying for them to come out :(

Oh well I'm happy with the service they provided so I think I'm just going to pay it anyway :)

To be fair once 2 tickets had been raised they did attend and fixed the problem within 24 hours. I don't see if we have any recourse to claim back the cost of calls for the 3 days we didn't complain about it. There was work being done on the road side outside for the water mains and we saw 2 chorus vans there on both days so assumed it was due to that.
