Hi
i decided to upgrade to broadband from dialup
i got a wireless network kit from telecom planning to have broadband on my pc as well as wireless access on my laptop,
i have just tried to setup the modem but am unable to connect the ethernet cable from the modem to my pc because it doesnt seem to have an ethernet port to connect too,

is there anyway i can get around this problem? maybe some kind of adapter or something?

You can always get a PCMCIA Ethernet Adapter. Does your laptop have wireless capabilities?

For your desktop you can get a cheap (about $15) Ethernet card from Dick Smith. Check the one with the code XH8265.

yes my laptop does have wireless, will that be very hard to set up once i get this modem installed?

thanks for the suggestions guys, the $15 one from dick smith seems like a good cheap option, but will it require some good computer knowledge to be able to install??
if so im not sure if i could do it

be a suitable alternative? although it is quite a bit more expensive so i would prefer the $15 one.

It should work for your computer - if you can space a USB port. Either way you will need some (minimal) software installation. Basically some install and forget driver that comes with the hardware.

with the USB options, make sure you got good fast computer and is using USB 2.0 otherwise, you will get a crippled network and if the system is working overload you will notice that your network will be first to go down as it uses USB 2.0 and since CPU aren't coping to deal with the heavy workload it will start dropping processes.

With PCI network card, it is pretty easy, open up the case, stuff it into one of the PCI slot and boot Windows XP up. most PCI network card (and i think DSE's too) are using the Realtek, and XP has native driver for it out of the box, so let it install and follow the router's instruction.

yeah i don't think my pc can handle usb 2.0 i tried plugging a video cam to it which didnt work, is there any way i can check before i buy the usb 2.0 adapter,
looks like i might have to try the pci card,

if you're going to get the USB 2.0 adapter, you might as well just get PCI Ethernet card.

unless you intend to keep your current pc for years to come and to add USB 2.0 support. i advice just get PCI Ethernet card.

XH8265 should be sufficient as you don't really need 1gigabit network card due to all other devices are not operating at that speed. ($15)

XH8272 which has IEEE1394, USB 2.0 and Gigabit LAN is a nice combo if you want both Ethernet LAN as well as USB 2.0 and IEEE 1394 without having to put them in each individual slots. But the price will be slightly higher too. ($59)

The choice is up to you what you want and what you like to get for. Both installation should be easy, just make sure you have a spare PCI slot available for installation. Follow the instruction in the manual, although the manual usually is pretty skim on details. Most drivers should be available natively by XP but if not, just install them from the driver CD provided, and it is wise to check DSE's site to see if they have newest driver available for download.

hi again,
i went and got that $15 PCI thing and have succesfully got it installed and broadband going on my PC, thanks for the advice.
Now however, i am having problems getting wireless broadband access on my laptop, my laptop is wifi capable so im thinkin i dont need to buy any more equipment to get it up and running, i tried running the wireless setup wizards with no luck,
can anybody help?
