Unraid have just confirmed they are changing their license model. Basically they won’t be offering free software updates beyond the first year unless you buy their most expensive license.

They are grandfathering all existing licenses, which is great, but it’s a shame they have to go this way.

hmmm I already have a Pro key, so thankfully not effected for now...

As long as I can still move my Pro license to a new box in the coming months, I'm happy.

How have they been funding their existence to this point? I suspect the number of people using the free license has grown and grown, just becomes unsustainable after a while I guess.

Edit : $129 for a license for life seems insanely cheap.

Existing users don't look to be affect will just be new licenses. Current accounts will be grandfathered in so it wont change for O.G users.

What free license? Unraid has always been paid software.

Yeah. I upgraded my Plus license just in case I end up going past the 12 drive limit. It’s unlikely but worth it to keep getting upgrades. They are going about the change in a decent way.

The sense of entitlement that some users have expressed on the unRAID forums (and Reddit) is quite incredible. The new licence structure seems entirely reasonable. I spent $120US for a Pro licence in 2009 and another $30US for a second Pro licence a few years latter - easily the best value I've had from any purchase in my entire life.

Once I saw that they had changed to a Co-CEO setup I was pretty sure it was a father-daughter pairing, along with the son-in-law running the community. It's nice to see that it is a family business.

I think the issue here was they put the code out there before any announcement was made so were on the back foot, and people didn't know they were going to grandfather in plans.

They are also probably being caught in the Broadcom/VMware licensing changes concerns as well. if it was 2 months ago in in 3 months time once VMware has died down....

They could of cause done an EOL of Unraid and released Unraid NG (or similar) andmade everyone buy new... so much a storm in a tea cup.

Add in the black friday sale and I'm sure you can get the new top tier for not much more...

Lifetime licences are only a matter of time before they die. In practice, "lifetime" does not refer to the life expectancy of the user, but that of the company or the product. 😁

- NET: FTTH, OPNsense, 10G backbone, GWN APs, ipPBX
- SRV: 12 RU HA server cluster, 0.1 PB storage on premise
- IoT:   thread, zigbee, tasmota, BidCoS, LoRa, WX suite, IR
- 3D:    two 3D printers, 3D scanner, CNC router, laser cutter

I've only got 6 devices attached but still only had the basic license. Updated to Pro because they've been great to deal with plus why not. It just means I won't run into limitations in the future that way.

unRAID has been unpriced for years IMO.  paid $119 14 years ago for pro, in that time its gone up $10.

Totally worth every cent, worth more than that.  14 years of updates, gez.  amazing.

This all seems fair and reasonable. I get a megaton of value from my server.

Same here I'm up to 14 drives and 72TB of storage.
I really like the way docker is implemented via community application. If I want to try a VM I can the software is incredibly flexible for a home user.

Haven't really heard about unraid before. It looks like it's just an expensive Portainer view?
