I've had my beloved P900 for a while now and I'm planning on buying a P990i in the next couple of weeks. I've been reading reviews (some just after the phone was released)  about it and a lot of them are not good. People are saying that it hangs, crashes,re-starts on it's own and various other problems.

But... I have also been finding that you can get a firmware upgrade for it to fix the bugs. What I'd like to know is...  if I buy one now, will it already have the updated firmware installed or am I going to have to do it myself?  I have already emailed SE about this but until they reply I thought someone here might know. The phone isn't cheap so I don't really want to have to upgrade the thing from day 1. Also, when I buy it, how am I going to be able to tell if it does have the latest firmware installed? The shop I buy it from (probably a Vodafone outlet)  is hardly going to let me take it out the box and turn it on to check.
One other question...  Can anyone recommend another phone similar to this eg. Wifi, in case I decide not to go  with the P990i.
Any help is appreciated Innocent

I've just bought a p990i and it's pretty stable with the current firmware. The only problem is that you cannot access the Vodafone 3g live services such as mobile tv. The firmware I have is the latest available in New Zealand and Sony Ericsson say that there are no new updates available here. There are newer versions available in other countries in europe. When an upgrade is available this is done by a piece of software that you install on your PC calles SEUS (Sony Ericsson Update Service) so no need to get the dealers involved.

Hi Mark

Thanks for your reply. I bought a P990i last week and LOVE it. So far I've had absolutely no problems with it and when I called SE Support in NZ they told me the same as you that it should have the latest firmware installed. I still have a lot to learn about it.... but what an amazing phone Cool
