got a blackberry 9700, vodafone prepay, no data plan, no credit, but BB Messenger works?

Hi there

just wondering if anyone can explain to me how blackberry / 9700 bold works.

I have a 9700 bold
im on vodafone prepay
i have no credit 0.0$ balance

but I have a wifi connection through my modem.

Blackberry messenger works, i have added my overseas relative and am chatting to him now.
Blackberry windows live messenger works
Email works
Internet works.

Like funny thing though is
If i go to Mobile Network options -> Data services and turn it off.
Live messenger wont work lol.

So either.. the Data services on/off is just a trivial check, and im still using WIFI
or.. vodafone is just letting me use blackberry over GPRS for free?

Can someone confirm whats going on cause I don't get it lol

Yup it will just stop working magically. Why have a BB on prepay? You just get gouged. the best thing about BB is BBM and IM. Install Skype, and Google Talk, and forget about txting and calling.

BIS 200MB could be enough if you dont download massive email files.

Cause I just gotit and want to use the wifi to do emails msn etc. I didn't get a wifi enabled phone to go out n grab a bb plan n if I do endup being unable to chek mail or I'm over wifi ill sell this and get a phone which can before paying to do it over vodafone network AND get slower performance as result

If you didn't want a BB plan, maybe a BB wasn't the best choice.....

This is why it pays to reserach INFO about the device first

Yeah, guess I missed the paragraph in the specs on the official website saying "wifi. Except for email, instant messaging cause wed rather you pay for gprs" shame really cause its a good phone otherwise

I think there are separate pop/imap clients for BB that may work over wifi. Try googling it.

Cool so it stopped workin today. Fabulous..

So 3 questions.

1. i'm currently on prepay..
if I want to switch to get a basic blackberry data plan to use blackberry messenger,email.
What am I looking at in total per month including any calling plan i need to get.. $?

The vodafone website is a bit of a maze to navigate..

2. I tried creating an account @ http://bis.ap.blackberry.com/html
but after entering my pin/imei I got

"This BlackBerry(R) device is not registered with your wireless service provider.
Please register this device and verify that the URL of the current web site matches
the one provided by your wireless service provider.
To register:
1. In the Application list on your device, click Options, or click Settings Options.
2. Click Advanced Options > Host Routing Table.
3. Click the Menu key and click Register Now.
If the error persists, contact your wireless service provider."

I went into the host routing table I see is

*bold* GPRS NZ (530) [53000130]
Wi-Fi [60]
GPRS NZ (530) [53000130]

So I clicked the first one & hit register & got an SMS you have been registered or watever.
But when I tried to create account again same error...

3. Anyone want to trade a blackberry 9700 bold new 2 days out of the box (+ a bitta cash from me) for a Nokia N900 lol
Least on n900 I know you can use wifi for msn..
oh or a nokia n97 mini

I'm using a bb bold and I'm on txtr 60 plan plus a 200mb bb plan. Monthly total is around $75

Oh and I fell into the same trap when I bought my blackberry. It worked brilliantly for 2 days then stopped, that's how they lure you in. Didn't do my homework

sigh I figured as much.
I'm truly contemplating selling this on trademe or finding someone to trade with.
Especially since I plan on moving to Australia this year or next so don't reaaally wanna go and get tied down.

It's a shame because this is a nice phone I've gotten used to it and everything now..
Should have asked for a nokia n97 Mini / N900 lol...

PS: taking a quick look at vodafone website plans.
Would a combination of..

Easy60/Starter2000 plans @ $29.95/month
+ BlackBerry 100MB @$39.95/month

Work?
