Guys

Have had blackberry company phone for last few years and currently have a blackberry bold. We are on Vodafone and I just assumed these devices were SLOW to download, even with 3g.

Everything from stuff.co.nz to google searches, things seem to take an age, with lots of messages along the bottom such as requesting..., running script etc. Just tried to open stuff webpage and the blue progress bar along the bottom took best part of 3 minutes to complete. Then about another 2 minutes+ of loading date and running/requesting scripts before the webpage displays. Its currently still loading around 6 minutes later.

I thought it was the norm with mobile devices until I saw my colleagues (personal and also on Vodafone) iphone download the page in around 20 seconds.

Just tried shazzam which I downloaded last night and whilst my blackberry is still 'sending' the information her iphone has completed it and is displaying the track and album. Shazzam generally takes around 2 to 3 minutes to work on the bberry and around 20 seconds on the iphone.

Our IT support function is offshore in India and they connected me to the Vodafone helpdesk who were as much help as a chocolate fireguard. She worked through a number of issues from removing the battery to " you don't have a data plan "  to,  "you are using it in city centres and airports which is where most users will be accessing data so speeds are slow"...She spoke to the 'specialist" team but they seemed more interested in fobbing her off with nothing helpful.

Any clues as to why the bberry on Vodafone is mega slow compared to an Iphone - I am thinking its how the business phones have been set up but thats as far as I got.

We are currently looking across alternative providers so wondered if this could make a difference ?

Thanks for any input.

The built in Blackberry browser is one of the most hideous pieces of software to ever be unleashed on the world. I suspect they only released it because they enjoy seeing people suffering.

I have a blackberry and the browser is totally unusable, as you've noticed.

The best way I've found to speed it up (ha!) is to disable Javascript. This means pages tend to load in about 2 minutes instead of 20.

Really the only solution I've found is to use Opera Mini. The latest version 5 works quite well and gives you a somewhat usable "browser".

I don't have any problem with the data speeds themselves on the Blackberry.

Note: I don't have a bold I have a 8520.

Audiophiles are such twits! They buy such pointless stuff: Gold plated cables, $2000 power cords. Idiots.

Thx for the quick replies. I kind of feel better knowing its not me !  The browser I believe is the built in version. Shape of a globe with a yellow arrow wrapped around it.

At this time I allow the following

Support Javascript
Terminate slow running scripts
Use background images
Support Embedded media

The following is set to off

Allow javascript popups
Show images
Show image placeholders

I'll try turning off java script completely...

I guess what I'm hearing is even with a new phone and new provider its going to be hellishly slow ?

@johnr it's the same browser though isn't it? It can just use different Profiles.

Mine has 4:

Hotspot Browser
Vodafone Live!
Blackberry Browser
Internet Browser

They're all rat-arse slowpoke.

@ Muppet, nope they are different. Blackberry browser is for web, Vlive is for VFNZ walled garden, and never seen the other 2. Also the 8520 doesn't even run 3G, so you are using 2G for data, thats the reason for the slowness your experiencing.

@ OP What version OS are you running?
I have a Storm and the Browser used to be uber slow until the latest revsions of 5.0 now its as quick/er as Safari on iOS4.0.

My Storm takes 8s for google searches, 27s to load the full www.stuff.co.nz page @ 557k & 65 images, thats on 3G Queenstown. Not particularly fast, but not that bad. Opera took 11s but that the mobile version.

They are all the same browser software though.  The different profiles carry traffic in different ways - on my BBBold, 'Blackberry Browser' carries traffic through our corporate BES, 'Internet Browser' direct through the Internet APN, 'Hotspot Browser' for logging in to wifi hotspots, etc.

If gedc's enterprise is set up in the same way as mine, the reason it is so awfully slow is due to the traffic being carried back to the corporate BES on the other side of the world and then back out to the Internet again. Switching to the Internet browser profile should be much faster.

Edit to add: In fact, the Blackberry tunnelled traffic on a 3G Blackberry is slower than using a 2G Blackberry on the same site via the Internet APN.

Cheers for the clarification.  Storm1 doesn't have wifi, and I'm on BIS, hence not seeing the other two. Hopefully the changes help.

My version number is V 4.6.0.266 (Platform 4.0.0.223)

Using the internet browser option is faster albeit not by heaps though.

Sealed  On that software version.... If your on BES it may be a mission, but try and get your techs to upgrade you to 5.0 for a start.....

So....Updates

New Bold 9700..Now on Telecom XT...

Same issues...Telecom rep said its definitely the BES which I am inclined to agree with given the symptoms are exactly repeatable on the new phone and new provider.

Our IT team in OZ said yet again, its the network provider until I kicked up stink at which point they asked for the IMEI id for the phone.

Can someone in plain english explain to me what I need to be telling them to get this god forsaken browser function to work something close to normal.

Is there a reason it has to go through BES in a different country ?? IF so would this not affect all blackberry users?

Cheers

Ged
