Hey guys,

Is anyone else finding themselves just less and less excited by gaming? That the industry is perhaps running dry of innovation?

I've recently found myself disappointed with gaming, perhaps because I got stung by Watch_Dogs last year and The Division this year, regret buying the season pass I haven't used. My gut told me not to get No Mans Sky despite how hyped I was for it and it seems I was right, its a disappointment too. I find myself unlikely to preorder games and just get them preowned at a cheaper price and to also avoid season passes, one reason I avoided Star Wars Battlefront.

I was really hyped for Battlefield 1, having played Battlefield 4, so much so I was tempted to get the early enlister and jump in. Its been a while since I've been hyped for a game but after No Mans Sky and the rubbish season pass for The Division, I'm even tempted to give it a miss now. I'm swaying more towards caution rather than excitement and I miss that, the preordering a game, the excitement of counting down and then picking it up the day of release. I don't know if we as gamers just expect too much and over hype games or if game companies just aren't delivering anymore.

I love games with a good story so Uncharted 4 and The Last of Us fit this so well but I cant justify paying $100 for a game that lasts 15 hours. Battlefield 1 I could pile hours in online but there is no real story, just repeated shooting online and I feel over repeated grinding now, there doesn't feel like there is an 'end'. Same with other games, repeated shooting, or repeated racing or repeated beat em ups, they just all seem the same. Maybe I'm hard to please but I just find myself less and less excited about games and picking one to buy. I want to buy myself one but I can't decide what. The last game I can think of I truly got good hours out of, a good story and gave me an 'end' was Ni No Kuni.

What about you guys? What do you think.

I got many hours out of The Witcher 3 and enjoyed the story. Been having good fun on Battlefield Beta as well. Really like the setting and the bolt action rifles etc. Just a shame on console not many people seem to talk in Battlefield.

I'm playing the Battlefield 1 beta too, maybe its the map but I'm just not thinking wow I want this game, I'm not disappointed either, just in the middle. Maybe I'm just not interested in the competitiveness of games anymore.

Last game I got excited about was GTA5 on PS3...... since then, nothings really made me go "oh wow, MUST GET". I picked up Overwatch recently mainly because all my mates were playing (and Im a sheep, baaaaaa.....), but Im really enjoying it.

Maybe Im finally growing up and games just dont interest me as much anymore...... :)

In recent years I have enjoyed games like GTA series, Red Dead Redemption, Fallout 4, Uncharted series etc - on PS3 and now PS4.

Currently playing The Witcher 3. Took me while to get into it and to learn how to use the inventory and all the other mechanics - but having mastered most of that, I'm really enjoying it. Quite a decent storyline to it.

When I've finished or got sick of it, I'll most likely get the latest Uncharted - but as noted above it's pricey so may wait until used ones appear on TradeMe.

Also awaiting Civ 6 with some interest - massive Civ fan in the past. However I'm not sure if it will run on my laptop and I don't want to upgrade just for that. Have been looking for its system requirements but they've not been released yet.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

I was playing The Witcher 3 too but then diverted to The Division due to hype. Still need to finish the Witcher 3 but will grab the two expansions too when I do.

I'm now playing Until Dawn, really enjoy it, something different to other games, got it for $23 from PB tech clearance but probably wouldn't pay full price for it.

If I don't get Battlefield 1 I will probably get Elder Scrolls V Skyrim as never played it. The reason I am looking at something new rather than finishing Witcher 3 is I have a few games to trade in and the extra 30% from EB is pretty nice. Usually the 30% extra on preorder, 15% member extra and no trademe fees they match more evenly and its convenient, just no cash though.

Yep. The older I get, the less I can be bothered persisting with a game.

2016 has had multiple GREAT games released.

I have played none of them - due to kids and job.

I don't think it is gaming - it is most likely to be you.

I think some of that stuff has been hit miss.

When I was 18~22 I could never imagine myself getting bored of PC games. I was a "hardcore" gamer. But I grew up. I changed.

The industry is not really lacking innovation, I just either:

1) get bored of games a lot quicker than I used to.

2) found I was playing the wrong types of games. I prefer strategy and puzzle oriented games with nice graphics.

3) got old, and had kids.

But yeh if you want to talk about innovation look at new stuff out now like the HTC Vive and Rift.

The graphics in Battlefield 1 Open Beta have blown my mind, and I imagine they are on track to just get even more realistic.

Things that have disapointed me about gaming is lack of new Ideas.

E.g. FPS games, I found stuff like Farcry and Duke Nukem 3d awesome, but now you are playing what fallout 4 borderlands 2 or 3 and farcry 3 or 4. Overwatch has been exciting too because it was cleverly designed to be jump in for a 10~20 minute match then log out if you lead a busy life. You can still enjoy it.

RTS, Starcraft/2/3/expansions and Warcraft 1/2/3/expansions and Age of empires 1/2/3 rise of nations. etc... the list goes on, they are all the same games. a few new units storys and maps with some mild gameplay or graphics improvements.

Even GTA/1/2/3/4/5 etc and Need for Speed series is heading down this road. I mean there is not a lot of difference between GTA3 and GTA5 or Saints Row.

New games like no mans sky, prenumbra, amnesia and odd things that come along are exciting. Perhaps you need to either play a little less and enjoy life more. Or your not browsing hard enough to find the good stuff.

I would have to agree here...

some games live on, you just cant really be all that hardcore into one single game eventually...

BeamNG drive can be quite addictive. Available on Steam.

No real point to it, just driving. Good physics engine.

I feel there are still games coming out that are breaking the boundaries but yes there are many games coming out are just following the same old story lines and game mechanics.

I found that I actually quite enjoyed the early game in the devision, but after finishing the campaign it just became a disaster of trolls shooting you in the back with nothing for them to gain(i have seen people in there with massive negative darkzone credits) then they hide in a corner for a few seconds to lose there rouge status before you can even come back in to the dark zone and the replaying the missions for Phoenix credits was just not worth the hassle.

SW:Battlefronts main issue was lack of content. I just had to give up there where not enough maps for the price and I could not really see a point in paying more for content that should have been included in the base game otherwise it was not a bad playing game it was just not enough.

No Mans sky is actually an odd one. I have to wonder if the response would have been much different if they slapped an early access tag on it. As from all reports they will be adding in many of the things people actually want later. But at it current state just becomes one massive grind session of doing the same thing over and over again with no real payoff. The other thing against it was there was stuff that was in an early E3 game preview that was not in the actual game.

But yes there have been so many games that have been so close to actually being great games this year that are just missing something for the price they want.

I have also found that many games for some reason in recent years have made the person you play be totally un-redeemable uninteresting or just a bit of a jerk sometimes I long for a mute Gordon Freeman.

Some part of me also thinks that some of it is due to the fact there are more indy publishers coming out causing noise and in many cases these games are actually as good or better than what the A++ studios are offering and are far cheaper than those on offer from the big studios.

The one big game left this year that I'm interested in is Ghost Recon. It looks like one of those games that could go either way.

Having just played the Titanfall 2 tech demo I can see things in there I like but I want to see a bigger game. Bigger maps with more players on a server. They just feel really small.

If this year has taught me anything pre orders no matter what they include are just not worth it.

My standouts that I'm playing heaps of at the moment are Rocket League and KSP.

Yes, I have been feeling burnt by games being over hyped and under delivering. GTA5 was good once I was finally able to get the online bit working, and there lies one of the big problems, so many games are released not fully working, or being nothing like the advertising, like watchdogs.

The most fun I have had recently has been from free or really cheap early access games, World of tanks, Minecraft and lately Ark Survival. WOT gives me the basic just blow stuff up after work short 15min blasts. Ark gives me the feeling of doing something, but not on official servers, play on unofficial modded servers. Team work or solo, build something, plan an attack on someone...

Yeah - 'unlimited funds' is an interesting thought. Started gaming soon after we bought our first PC when our son was seven in 1994. Over 22 years I have bought at least 100 games (probably a lot more than that) and at an average of $100 each (some were a lot more, some less) - that's $10,000 minimum - very scary and I'm not letting SWMBO in on the maths.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.
