Hey guys,

I recently played Ni No Kuni and a little of Disgaea 4 on a Vita but decided I didn't like gaming on a Vita. However I feel like I have a JRPG itch to scratch and love the anime/art direction. I've looked online and see lots of people recommending different series and games to play but I already have a big backlog. Wondered what people advise. I have a PS3 and PS4.

These seem to be classics people recommend.

PS3:

Resonance of Fate

Eternal Sonata

Folklore

White Knight Chronicles

PS4:

I am Setsuna

Odin Sphere Leifthrasir

Valkyria Chronicles Remastered

Child of Light

A lot of people say to try Disgaea but 1 and 2 are quite old now so was thinking of starting on 3 and getting 3, 4, D2 (Maybe triple pack on PS3) and then 5 on PS4. Some say Disgaea 3 isn't that good and to skip and D2 seems to be a sequel so perhaps just 4 and 5?

Another one is Star Ocean and the recommendation seems to be to get Star Ocean: The Last Hope International, I know theres a PS4 game too: Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness.

One of the more popular series is the Tales of:

Tales Of Graces F

Tales of Xillia

Tales of Xillia 2

Tales of Symphonia Chronicles

Tales of Zestiria

Finally another series is the Atelier series. Online seems to say start with the Arland trilogy (Rorana, Totori, Meruru). Should I maybe start with the Dusk series (Ayesha, Escha & Logi, Shallie) or even just jump start onto the PS4 with the Mysterious series (Sophie).

I'm tempted to go all for PS4 and jsut get Persona 5, Disgaea 5, Atelier Sophie: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Book, I am Setsuna, Valkyria Chronicles Remastered, Odin Sphere Leifthrasir, Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness, Tales of Zestiria and Tales of Berseria. A lot to read I know but basically looking for good JRPG's :)

If you're looking at a PS4, then you might want to consider FFXV. It's a little muddled in spots ,as any game that spent 10+ years in development would be, but it's a great open-world (action) JRPG. I'd also second the recommendation for the Atelier series, though only if you enjoy crafting. Combat's fairly simple, but the crafting is where most of the joy is found in those games. Otherwise, I think the list you have there is looking pretty good.

Do you have a PC?

I would also recommend looking at some of the classic re-releases or versions of things like the Final Fantasy and Kings Quest series - I believe a fair few of these are appearing on IOS now as well.

Even better would be to get a SNES and PSX emulator running and playing some of the real classics:

Final Fantasy 3-6 (or FF1 to 3 if you take the Japan numbering!) with 6 being the best

FF7 (obv)

Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross

Suikoden 2

Earthbound (Mother 2)

Yeah heard good things about FF15 so I'll add it to my list, also interested in all the Kingdom Hearts remasters.

Any recommendations of where to start with Atelier series?

I do have a Laptop but try and keep my gaming to consoles. I can see FF 5-9 on the PS store a long with Suikoden 1-3, but only play number 2? The others not very good?

Can't see Earthbound anywhere. I have a 3DS so could grab a copy of Chrono Trigger. Cross can't see anywhere, only on PS1.

Thanks so far guys.

Anything I can remove from the list as theres quite a lot, haha.

I only played 2 and it is generally recognized as the series high point, but 1 and 3 are also highly rated.

I think Earthbound and some of the other classic Nintendo releases are available on Wii-U virtual console?
