Ok so a few weeks back, my Huawei wifi router suddenly died and finally I got Spark to replace it. I now have wifi but it is not working well anywhere in the house. Have changed channels and checked with a wifi analyser and the problems don't make immediate sense.

So Spark router is new but this goes into an edimax box es3308p which then goes into the main box with all the cables in it. Then it runs down by Ethernet to an old d link 22m away and that deals with wifi at the other end of the house. So Huawei - Edimax - Ethernet - D Link. It strikes me as strange that I don't run the Huawei to the box via an Ethernet cable and straight to the D Link? Do I need the switch? Any views on this?

Next, if say the D Link or Edimax is not running well, will that affect both routers? I have my tablet set to show me how many kb per sec and it jumps around all over the place from 0 to 2 to 70 to 150 and back again every 5 secs or so. This happens if I am sitting right beside a router and happens on both routers. Is this normal? We have VDSL

Sounds like the edimax is redundant.

The spark router should have 4 ports on it - the cable to the D-Link will use one port, leaving you with 3 for hard wiring devices.

If you need more than 3 hard wired ports, then yes use the edimax, otherwise bypass it.

"an old d link" could be part of the issue . Is that an old ADSL Dlink or a wifi access point.

start again , from scratch
1) Disconnect Dlink. Test wifi via the Spark router , in the same room, with a laptop(if possible)
2) Test internet via a network cable (wifi off) : see if that works any better (use a PC/laptop)
3) connect the Dlink last. Then test that . Test in the same room as the Dlink.

Ray, it turns out I do need it. Its at the back of the garage under mounds of boxes so I had my teenager go and have a look and yes we do need it, from the photos, it looks like the set up is that each Ethernet cable comes back to the switch rather than being on a loop. So there are 7 of those.

1101, I'll try that this afternoon when I get in. It is an old adsl d link about 6 years old. I think it is operating as a wifi access point?? Operating in bridge mode I think but yes, I suspect it may be the problem too so I'll let you know once I have had a chance to take it off.
