Sorry if this is not the correct forum. Couldn't quite figure out where to slot this.

My 3 year and 1 week old Synology 1815+ appears to have died. It’s been running sweet with 4x RED 6TB drives in Raid and 1x RED 10TB standalone.  Added another 1x10TB drive about 6 days ago and it initialised and played nicely.  I primarily use it as for media storage and Kodi playback around the home network.

Went away on Friday for a weekend, came back Sunday night and it’s cold and dead. No lights, won’t power up at all.  Pulled the plug, put it back in – just nothing.   Read lots online last night about that model ( and a few others ) having Intel Atom CPU issues as well as lots of them bricking due to power supply failure and Synology giving them an extra year of warranty as a result etc.

Is there any definitive way for me to establish what is wrong with it, without taking it apart ?   I’ve contacted the vendor where it was purchased from in NZ and asked them if they will consider it as a warranty fix.  Still waiting to hear.

The fact it died a week after adding another drive leads me to think the PSU may have been on the edge and the extra load may have pushed it over ?   But..not knowing lots about PSU’s this may be completely wrong J

I am planning to remove the drives tonight and see if I can get it to boot without them in it..

Cheers for your thoughts

I'm using five different Synology NAS units, the largest and oldest of which is a Synology DS1813+ (the 2013 version of your dead NAS).

All are filled with 10TB WD Red HDDs.

None of these units (or drives) have failed (yet!).

If you had a sudden complete failure, with no lights or fan noise, then I share your suspicion that the power supply has failed.

As your NAS is only just outside the three-year period, I would definitely try for a warranty fix.

Could also argue expected lifetime is > 3 years (I would say 5) therefore is covered by CGA

Hi, I would say PSU is most likely, although as noted this model had an Intel CPU issue. If you are in Auckland you could reach out to the NZ distributor (VST) and see if you can take it in and check on a test supply, and order a replacement if needed, they are sold as a spare.

Thanks all. Will check tonight with drives out etc.   Retailer has agreed to review under a warranty claim.  Just emailed me.

Now inclined to buy another and get this one replaced as well.  :)

Thanks for the feedback

If you do that, I urge you to to look at some of the latest models that have built-in PCIe slots, or slots for an M2 SSD cache.

This may be over-kill for your needs, but everything works much faster.   I like speed ...  🙃

See:  Which Synology NAS models support SSD cache?

So..As an update. Sent off my now faulty NAS - well wrapped and $70 postage to Computerlounge.  Received my replacement model tonight. Different serial number. Full of dust - HDD holders, inside and fans coated. Scratched outer cover.  It's not even refurbished / cleaned from previous user. I have no idea if it's been hammered or not, life of it etc

While trying to remain positive, I would have expected a replacement model to be of comparable quality/ clean etc. This has come from another user repair or has been in use and pulled off a shelf.

I would have assumed they would replace the power brick or whatever was the issue in my machine and at least I would know the history etc

CGA indicates & cases would suggest refurbished goods are not acceptable repairs or replacements for major faults within items.

Thoughts appreciated while i think about my response to CL.  Appreciate this may not be an issue for some but the one I returned was not used significantly and was in mint  physical condition.

Thanks
