Hi there

I currently have a D-Link DSL G-604T Router/modem at thome. This is connected to my mediacentre, laptop (both wired and wi-fi) and xbox 360. The laptop has a Intel(R) Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN card but only 10/100 lan while the mediacentre has a gigabit lan connection. I would like to speed up file tranfers (mainly video) between the 2 and also perhaps share an external HDD.

I have looked at an Apple Airport extreme as a possible solution. That does not offer ADSL connection so my question is can I connect the DSL 604T to the airport and access the net through it. This might also give me the advantage of using the airport in 5GHz setting for N only and the D-Link in 2.4GHz b/g. Would this work? I imagine the setup would be something like in the pic (apologies for the poor drawing skills)

Possible network layout

If this will work is there any special setup required?

I believe that this would work.

If you place in the aiport, then you will need to make a decision about where the DHCP is going to be performed from - and ensure that your IP ranges are in sync.

I would avoid using the NAT that is probably built into the Airport (i.e. the WAN port from the airport plugged into the ADSL modem) - you won't need to NAT a connection that's already NAT'd, plus you will want to ensure all the devices on your LAN will communicate with each other.

You *might* be lucky and be able to run the airport in some sort of bridge mode, but in the past, I've found it easiest just to use the 4 port hub built in - however I don't know how the wireless on the airport will work.

Disclaimer - I haven't used an airport device at all.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for your reply. Looks like I may have to go to Magnumac or somewhere to get a definite answer.
