If it's a USB device, have you tried swapping it into a different USB port?

Does it have an LED light anywhere on it - Does this light up?

You could perhaps try going into the windows device manager, find the device and "Uninstall" it, then "Scan for changes" and it *should* reinstall.

Though while you are in device manager before you delete it, you may be able to see some info about the device.

If windows cant see(isn't displaying the device it it could mean its failed) - they do sometimes.

How about the HP troubleshooter tools that are probably already installed on your laptop?

How old is the laptop?

I had an older laptop where the internal wifi failed - The quickest fix was just to buy a USB wifi dongle. Depending on specs (2.4GHz wifi is the cheapest), they start around $20.

Those Ralink RT3290 (Found Predominately in the HP Probook 4XXXS series) were notoriously known for over heating

TBH I would replace it with a USB wifi adapter, better yet just replace the laptop as they are at least 3 years old now

Are you confident disassembling your laptop a little? Sometimes WiFi cards are easily accessed, sometimes not.

I've got a few rescue & recycle cards, you can have one of them if you're good to go there with a screwdriver. HP will have a system board diagram for your model showing the WiFi card location. It'll only be held there by a single screw, it's easy to ID the WiFi card, it's the one with 2 fine aerial wires running from it.

I'll need your laptop model number too, so I send one that fits.
