Hi all

I have a HG659B router provided by Spark and its been fine for years but with the addition of some extra security cameras I think I'm noticing a few glitches and slowdowns.
I'm wondering if I'm overloading the network so looking for advice if I need to upgrade the router.

Its plugged directly into the Spark fibre box.
All LAN ports on the back are used

2 LAN ports go directly to desktop PCs
1 LAN port goes to a 5 port switch which has 7 high def cameras
1 LAN port goes into a Synology 5 Disc 15TB NAS which stores files and the camera footage
WIFI is on and mainly just connects a few mobile phones and a printer

Would I see any benefit from upgrading the router to a newer model?

If the Cameras are constantly writing footage to the NAS, you might want to think about putting them all on the same switch ..

That should cut down on some of traffic heading to and from the router...

It has a 32 device limit on the wifi from memory:

Could be the patch cables....they look cheap.... :)

Edit: I once replaced a client's 659B after it started dropping connections.

It was around 6 years old, I replaced it with another 659B and her connection has been fine ever since. I have a box full I'd be happy to send you one.

Assuming your cameras are writing data to the NAS storage.

Move the NAS device on to the sub-switch so data flowing between the cameras and the NAS are not traversing the spark router switch.

Other than that, the spark router should be fine. Its processing power is only being used when traffic flows through it. You could have 100+ devices attached to the network but only when they transfer data through it does it need to do any thinking.

I also have a 659B configured as an AP, connected to a switch. (My UAP is on the shelf lol)

Just now I happened to cast an 8GB video file from my desktop to Chromecast (connected to 659B) and wouldn't you know it - the stream froze up every few seconds.

Rubbish below was plugged into the router for some reason, I swapped it with Dynamix Cat6 and wallah - no more stutter.

Not saying it's definitely the cable in OP's case but worth mentioning. :)
