Hi all,

In a previous post on here I was advised to fit a TPlink TD-8840 modem in the Vynco Logixx VCC40 communication cabinet and now I want get your ideas for the best suited switch to go in the cabinet (located in the garage) as well as a wireless router for inside the house.

As far as the switch is concerned, would something like the Hills HES-108 be ok or would the TPlink TL-SG1008 be better? I need at least 8 ports. The Hills is only 10/100, while the TPlink is 10/100/1000. Would this matter if I don't use the internet to steam movies?

Finally I will need a wireless router in the house for connecting my laptop to. Currently I have the Telecom supplied Thomson TG585v7, but not sure if it can act as a wireless router only.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi, any switch will do, the TPLink has the same box as the 8840 modem so obviously will be fine. For most folk a 10/100 switch is just fine, even if you stream movies, very few modern HD video files exceed 10-12Mb/s, hardly going to stress a 10/100. Otherwise the TPlink 8port GigE switch is in the same case as the 10/100 one but twice the price (around $32 for 10/100, $80 for GigE).

Yes you can use the old Thompson modem/router/AP as just a wireless AP, simply turn its DHCP server off and plug into any of its LAN ports and viola.
