I've started with HomeKit and Aqara - while their switches are pretty nice they are square instead of a more common elongated rectangle here in NZ - and I don't wanna be re-working drywall just to replace switches.

Also while Home Assistant was pain to setup, now that it's working (I'm using Athom plugs) - it's pretty ok as it gives me all sort of flexibility and is available in HomeKit.

Friend shared me a list of pre-flashed Tasmota devices:

I went with the PDL Wiser Zigbee switches.

Sparky had no problem sourcing them, they paired directly to zha.

They were pricy, but basically nothing in the house build budget.

I'm not an expert in this or anything, but I believe that anything that is wired to the mains in your house needs to be certified to NZ standards, which might have some implications with insurance if something were to go wrong and cause a fire.

I also ended up going with PDL Wiser and also have them connected to Home Assistant via ZHA (no need to buy PDL's expensive zigbee hub)

You are correct so it's something to consider, the supplier provides an sdoc which says how it meets the regulations. (I dont think the athom smart plugs mentioned above would meet this either)

You could use your dumb switches and pairing them with something like a shelly device that sits behind them?

some of the shellys though not all of them have nz approval (sdocs)

An SDOC is what you need for the sale of items. Things can be installed without one but the sparky or engineer specifying it is taking on all liability which is unlikely with a domestic sparky being interested.

AFAIK there is nothing either way about when a DIYer legally changes their own switches to one that does not have any approvals and there is a problem. That is why I am sticking with the arlec tuya ones for anything in wall despite some much better options existing on Aliexpress. People always say "it will invalidate your insurance" without ever being able to point out a case where that has happened and bring up cases where people have wired their house with extension cords and other dumb stuff as an equivalent.
