Is it correct that to download even a free basic app (such as the banking app for my bank) from Apple Store to an iPhone

one must first give credit card information and user date of birth to create the Apple account?

If so it seems to me  more 'intrusive' than a Google account, where as I remember just an email account and password

are sufficient.

I think thats correct, but I do recall there is a workaround, check Google.

Apples model is making money from sales, so they require the CC to help that along, you don't need to use it, you don't need to buy paid apps

Googles model is search and advertising so you are the product being sold, so they remove as many barriers to get you, the end product, on the market

You don't need to load a cc. Should be able to skip it

I've got a US store account that I only use vouchers on. Never needed a CC

At last count, you can't skip it, in an intuitive way, but it can be skipped somehow, and within Apple terms, can't recall how tho

This is very easy. Make sure you are not already logged in wth an apple id. Go and down load any free app from the app store and follow through instructions to create new id. When it gets to payment option just select "none".

Yeah, the trick is to create the account as part of the process when "buying" a free app. If you try to create the account separately then it asks for payment details.

You can also go into your account and remove and credit card details by setting it to none.

And if you thinks stupid you can't create child accounts without a credit card loaded. Debit cards or vouchers are no good.
Not sure what they expect those to do who don't have a credit card?

It depends where you are making the apple ID from:

-If you make it from icloud.com on a web browser, i believe there is no option to skip the payments section.

-If you are using an IOS device, then it is easy to skip as mentioned above.

-If you use iTunes then there is a trick to it:

from: www.labnol.org - Create an Apple ID without using a Credit Card

Create Apple ID in iTunes without your Credit Card

  1. Launch the iTunes software on your computer and sign-out of your existing Apple ID. Choose Store in the menu and select Sign-out.
  2. Next scroll to the bottom of the iTunes page, click Change Country and select one from the list for which you need an Apple ID. Alternatively, you may click the country’s flag to switch to the iTunes store of another region.
  3. Now open the Apps Store inside iTunes, select any app that is free and click theGet button to download that App.
  4. iTunes will now prompt you to enter your Apple ID and password. Do not enter your existing Apple ID. Instead, click the Create Apple ID button, agree to the terms & conditions, enter your email address &amp password and minimum age.
  5. Proceed to the Payments screen and here you’ll see a new option that says NONE (see screenshot below). Select the None option, enter a dummy postal addressand submit to create your new Apple ID that will be valid in the iTunes store of that country.
