RCS messaging coming in iOS 18. This means I'll get messages on Android from iOS RCS users on Wifi with no cell reception or Wifi calling needed. Hopefully. It's been a long wait.

CNET: the update is slated to become available to the public in the fall with iOS 18. It's now rolling out with iOS 18 developer beta 2, 9to5Mac earlier reported.

RCS won't change blue-bubble vs green-bubble. If you really love that exclusivity you can breathe a sigh of relief : ).

Not sure why you mention Wi-Fi calling as RCS is not Wi-Fi calling related

Exactly. RCS on Android works without cell reception and works without wifi calling. I assume that will be true on iOS.

According to this wiki page it doesn't currently work with many providers. I presume it needs network support like MMS, VoLTE and so on do.

Yeah, my son on his iPod Touch was doing that 10 years or more ago with Messages, as well as using FaceTime .

RCS does not have E2E encryption ...

The Google RCS implementation is E2E How end-to-end encryption in Google Messages provides more security - Google Messages

This is on by default, and is off only if you turn it off.

If and when any operators build our own RCS servers here (and I can't say whether we will one way or the other) we will not have true end to end encryption due to TICSA obligations.

Given its "Google"...I would not trust it, sorry they have been caught doing the wrong thing too many times.
Googles whole schtick is using its customers information as products to sell to others , I do not believe they are going to lock themselves out of this data stream.

You might be right.

Having said that, my family and friends use Signal—I send one or two SMSs a month, if that.

There are some real gotchas with RCS. Ime nz It works only when both parties are online. If one party is offline then it will be sent as SMS. That is my experience Android to Android with me on Spark carrier and other party on Voda/One I think. Now I'm thinking about it I'll be asking..

Thinking about it logically, that makes sense. If the recipient's phone is offline then your phone doesn't know whether it can receive RCS or not. If it can't then the message would go into a black hole, and therefore it makes more sense to send as SMS.

Um... not sure if this is related and pardon my ignorance on this but... my wife's Samsung S21 FE on OneNZ seems very unreliable sending "Messages". A lot of the time the message is never received at the other end. Is this because the messages are being sent as other than plain old SMS and the other phone doesn't accommodate them? As far as I can tell they are just plain SMS messages but they do seem quite unreliable.

It could be getting turned into a MMS, many phones will do that if you use certain characters in the message, and then it is reliant on both ends having MMS configured and not having it disabled on the network because of the unexpected huge charges they have had in the past.

@johno1234 if the handset displays message sent then the issue is the B party side not A party (sending)
