"So all of us use laptops and smartphones... the question has arisen; is there room for something in the middle. We've wondered for years as well -- in order to create that category, they have to be far better at doing some key tasks... better than the laptop, better than the smartphone."

"What kind of tasks? Browsing the web. Doing email. Enjoying and sharing pics. Watching videos. Enjoying music. Playing games. Reading ebooks."

"If there's gonna be a third category, it has to be better at these tasks -- otherwise it has no reason for being."

Steve Jobs sums up the reason for the iPads existence.

What are your thoughts on the new device?

I don't know why, considering you can't do that much with a tablet form-factor fundamentally, but I expected more from Apple in the design stakes.

Looking forward to hearing more about what its like to use.

But, seriously, what a name. I've seen lots of jokes already, related to some personal hygiene products...

64gb? Pah!

Apple are supposed to be ground breakers, thought i'd see at least an upper range of 256gb.

Even the ipod touch comes with 64gb.

probably still get one though.

SIM unlocked, using micro SIM - so whatever NZ operator starts selling micro SIM first gets a lead.

Has anyone got a pic of what a "Micro SIM" actually looks like?, I thought the whole point about SIMs in WCDMA devices was their interchangability?, sounds like someone is trying to break this?, or are all devices going to move to a new card form factor in the near future??

These micro SIM were designed for embedded devices, not for mobile handsets... "Interchangeable" is not something they had in their minds when they created the micro SIM.

I laughed when I saw "unlocked, usable on any carrier" followed by "using a different type of SIM". Mixed signals, anyone?

There are three things that stop it from being a near perfect Gen I device..

Multitasking, 4:3 aspect screen and built in camera.

Very interesting release - I have to admit I wasn't expecting that many options with regard to memory size and 3G + wifi or wifi only. If anything, I thought there would be a 7" and a 10" model and they all would have 3G built in. It really is just a big iPod touch, with a bunch of extras thrown in.

Impressive, but the hype prior to release suggested more. No doubt will be a ground breaking device in the same manner as the iPod and iPhone.

Some good coverage going on here: http://live.twit.tv.../

First impressions are slightly disappointing form factor with bezel a bit prominent, lack of camera for what is surely a skypetastic form factor, impressed with the level of software development already in place and the pricing is pretty slick.

If the price dosent get hiked up once it arrives in NZ, Id be keen on one - even just the basic 16gb with Wifi would do me.
