In the last few weeks my data usage meter has gone through the roof. My connection(orcon genius) max is 12743kbps down and 1020kbps up.
My normal average usage every other month has been about 800-900mb per day(with the odd 1 or 2 1gb+ per day, a month) yet this month and a few days into last month I was hitting 1.8-2.3gb per day and even with dramatically less use then normal. Yesterday my reading is 1.87gb and I woke at 9am checked emails at work 9.30 (live in pretty much the same building) that night got home at 11pm(work and after Stephen k Amous comedy show, I do recommend) came home the wife watched MKR on tvnz on demand a 600mb video in max quality and bam 1.87gb. Then today the exact same up and out 9.30 but back at 8.30pm and already my usage was at 760mb weird.... so I called orcon and get told my wifi has been hacked...... believing them I reset my modem and made a new wifi password and reconnected all my devices. Guess what, all the device mac addresses, are the same as all my gear. I go on and check my usage again and in the space of under 10 minutes with no other devices using the connection its gone up another 200mb. I called them up again to again be told some one must be hacking my modem, but I have reset and changed the password all my other devices couldn't connect and it went up while the only web page I was on was their unmetered page.
Am I going crazy or am I being attacked by super hackers that can work out my hexadecimal password that has no obvious sequence or recurring letter or number not only once but twice and once in under 10mins and downloaded over 200mbs of stuff. *And I know it's not recorded in real time but still I hadn't been using it before this and also none of my devices are on during the day. At this rate I'm looking at almost doubling my normal monthly usage of 30gb the most I have ever gone over is 5gbs.
And I have isky so I have been watch game of thrones legit and un metered lol!

PS. Speeds have been atrocious lately as well, can no longer watch youtube a 30 sec video would take 2mins to load. It's fast on my 3g connection.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

Here are some things you can try:

1. Disconnect and/or turn off all of your devices. Leave it for an hour. What happens to usage?

2. If you don't have usage with everything off/disconnected, try turning on one device at a time (leave it for 30 minutes or so) and see what happens to the usage. If it's clocking up so fast this shouldn't be too hard.

3. If step 1. left you still with big usage, you may be under a DOS/DDOS attack. There is not much we can do in this scenario except to allocate a new IP address.

My suspects would be Photostream, iCloud, DDOS.

I'm starting to think DDOS but I dont understand what DDOS is or why that would happen. I had thought of icloud a week ago as i had app sync on so every time my wife downloaded a app it would download on my phone, so I turned that off as well as everything but "find my iphone". I dont believe I have a virus as i have only just updated and restored my macbook. To me its more like if I stream a 200mb they record my use at 400mb. like i turned everything off last night but still it went up not much but like 50+mb.

If turning everything off changed usage from 1Gb to 50Mb then it's one of your devices using the bulk of data I'd say.

Start with one device at a time, then disable one thing at a time - photostream, iCloud, Dropbox, Spotify, Skydrive and many other things automatically sync data.

You say you just re-installed your Macbook, are you sure it's not downloading updates?

Just things to check.

Cheers, but i did check all that stuff and there is no auto updates etc. It has to be something else as on the wed i was out all devices off and 2gb disappeared and on that night i used isky thats all and i can see that as unmetered use. I tried last night on my iphone using my 3g I used 50mb in one hour and doing the exact same thing on wifi on the ipad used 200+ yet if again I tether my ipad to my iphone's 3g I get the same use 50mbish usage. This is what is making me think there is something up with my metering as i just dont use the mac for much just edit the odd word, excel or publisher doc then email it off. I use the internet purely for video and stream tvnz but this month i havent really used it much. Yet last month heading to the end of the month the usage started to double then triple and last night was going up in blocks that were an impossible amount.

Its not the down time that is the issue its the when i use it for the same thing as previous months and its tripple the usage that gets me. I use hotmail, gmail, stuff.co.nz, gsmarena, dpreview, modmy, tvnz, tv3, isky(unmetered), facebook, yahoo news, failblog, geezone, the odd youtube(but not much as nothing will dam load) and a few other text/photo only websites. Im only ever home for about 2.5hrs(not inc sleep) a day the rest of the time is work cycling or going out.
How can the same use month on month go from a average of 800mb to 2.2ish the otherday before all this started happening my wife was sick she watched 6 hours of isky and that usage was only 1.3gb for 6 hours. the other day I watched 1hr on there and it came out at 1.368 lucky it was un metered.
