Hi,

we are on Snap lightwave home (30Mb UFB)

Occasionally I have seen failures to connect to sites (firefox browser fails with website might be down), also I might get a page that is only partly downloaded (no css style perhaps). Typically a browser reload will pull the page. This happened maybe every 10th page access a day or two ago. This is on a wired gigabit link.

Anyone else see this sort of thing, or know what is going on? Or if it happens again how to tell where the problem lies?

I tried some stuff like disabling adblock etc in case it was a software issue.

Are you using the correct DNS servers ie Snap's DNS and not 3rd party DNS servers?

Is this happening on multiple computers? If yes, it's the router, or if no, it's the PC (most likely).

2 possibilities strike me:

- DNS
- Are the computers DNS settings set to automatic or are you using a manually set DNS address?
- Is the router using an automatic DNS address from the ISP or are theDNS servers (that are given out to the client PCs) set manually?
- Does it help if you set the PC DNS address manually to the addresses on here: http://www.snap.net.nz/support/content/1/17/en/general-settings.html

- MTU
- Do these tests and report the result
- http://www.tp-link.us/article/?faqid=190
- http://www.letmecheck.it/mtu-test.php
If you can see the MTU size set in your router, advise what it is set to.

Thanks for those suggestions. I'll check when I get home.

Everything should be default, but it is possible that the computer had specific settings for our old adsl setup.

It is hard to say if other pcs had the problem I have only seen it a couple of times.

I get 403 on the .it site too. Snap VDSL.
Works via a box in Australia though.

Edit: It works when I disable IPv6.

Yep IPv6 issue, as soon as I disabled IPv6 it worked here too.
Weird though, I have had no issues with Snap's IPv6 up till now.

Is it IPv6 issues causing the OP's issue I wonder

sbiddle: Are you using the correct DNS servers ie Snap's DNS and not 3rd party DNS servers?

DNS on the windows 7 PC is set to obtain addresses automatically
DNS on the FritzBox is set to: Use DNSv4 servers assigned by the Internet service provider
IPv6 is disabled (due to facebook issues on android devices)

DNS is auto at both PC and router

MTU test shows 1426 is maximum unfragmented, which gives 1454 as max MTU
C:\Users\dale>netsh interface ipv4 show subinterfaces

I now remember I set this manually some time back to replace a 1300 MTU setting that was probably added by VPN software. I think 1454 was the MTU on the old ADSL router.

letmecheck gives:

The maximum MTU size is: 1492

Google thee command lines to effectively factory reset IP on your machine:

Netsh IP reset

Netsh windsock reset

I can't remember the exact command lines required.

For now, i have changed MTU to 1492 as a stab in the dark. I'll see if that helps before I try the factory reset.

One slightly strange thing is the the Fritzbox reports that it is using the secondary Snap DNS ip.

I think that's normal, I see the same on my Fritz from time to time

I updated to firmware 6.0.6 on my Fritz 7390 and now I see:

DNS servers used

202.37.101.1 (currently used for standard queries)
202.37.101.2

That looks more sensible.

I also performed the network reset which has given me a MTU of 1504.

We'll see if the problem persists.

I have figured out a workaround for the Facebook issue on mobile devices when IPv6 is enabled. In the Fritz Box, go Internet --> Account Information --> IPv6 tab and scroll to the bottom. Click Set MTU manually and leave it at 1280 bytes.

The Fritz Box doesn't allow ICMPv6 Type 2 packets into the network from outside unless you explicitly allow it in port forwarding AND you have privacy extensions disabled on your devices, which is not possible on most mobile devices.

Not allowing ICMPv6 Type 2 from any IPv6 address to any IPv6 address across the interfaces breaks a fundamental principal of IPv6 and IMO a bit of an oversight on the part of AVM. Setting the MTU on the router to the smallest possible size gets around this by avoiding ever having ICMP type 2 packets hit the wan side. It's a dirty workaround but it works.

Hey, so I'm not sure if you lot have seen my other thread. But we have the same issue, as I type this me and another person on this network have 5 tabs presently not loading...seemingly connecting to nowhereland.

We've tried the following with all the possible combinations of disabling IPv6/Using Google DNS/Using Snaps/etc

What the heck is going on here, its getting ridiculously frustrating.
