Hi everyone, there's a lot of detail in this message, but I've been doing quite a bit to troubleshoot my problem.

I'm on the 2Degrees Broadband 200/200 UFB plan. I use the FRITZ!Box 3790, with its Wi-FI disabled. I have three Airport Extremes in bridging mode, which I use as 802.11AC access points. We have a decent-sized house, and I find that this configuration gives me good signal strength in most of the house. The Airport Extremes are connected directly to the FRITZ!Box via Cat6 cable, which was professionally installed throughout the house.

Recently, I've had the impression that I may not be getting the full 200/200 I should be getting with 2Degrees Broadband. I've seen a couple of discussions here where people have reported some issues that may point to a glitch in international capacity, so figured it would just sort itself out in time.

This afternoon though, I had some free time, and performed some Speed tests. I was surprised to see that when connecting to the Christchurch Snap Speedtest server, which normally gives me about 200/200, my downstream was anywhere between 40 and about 110. Uploads are just fine, very close to 200.

The first tests were done via the 802.11AC Wi-Fi, which normally gives me the same results as wired Ethernet.
Connecting directly via Ethernet cable to the FRITZ!Box gave me my expected results, IE roughly 200/200. 2Degrees also confirmed my profile is correct, and reset it to be sure.

The obvious conclusion to draw was some sort of Wi-Fi congestion, although that's less likely up on 5 GHZ. To see if that was the issue, I connected an Ethernet cable to the Airport Extreme that is in my office, right next to the FRITZ!Box. This not only ruled out Wi-Fi issues, but also any problems with the longer cabling. I got the same poor results via the Airport Extreme when wired as I did on all the Airport Extremes when on Wi-Fi.

I've restarted all devices.

Last week, I updated to the 6.30 software for the 3790, and I wondered whether the "Green Mode" had been enabled, which slows the speeds of the Ethernet ports. It hadn't.

I saved my settings, restored to factory defaults, and did another speed test with the out of the box settings. The results were still poor when using any of the Airport Extreme devices.

I then followed the instructions to downgrade to the previous version of the firmware, only to find that because 2Degrees has a custom profile on the device, you can't do that. And they tell me there's no way they can help me downgrade.

Interestingly, they told me on the phone that the 6.3 firmware hadn't been officially tested for compatibility yet.

On the face of it, if I can connect via an Ethernet cable to the FRITZ!Box and get the expected speeds, the problem seems to be with the Airport Extremes. But this is happening with three units, which haven't been touched, and where the software hasn't changed since March of this year.

I can't explain why speeds are so poor with the Airport Extremes, wired or wireless, but the next step would seem to be to downgrade the FRITZ!Box if I only could.

If I'm stuck with this speed because I'm unable to downgrade, meaning I can only take full advantage of the 200/200 in my office, then I guess the logical choice is to switch to an ISP like BigPipe that gives me 200/200 without VLAN tagging, so I can take the FRITZ!Box out of the equation entirely and connect one of the Extremes to the ONT.

Any other suggestions very welcome. Thanks. Obviously at this point, I'm wishing I'd left well alone with the firmware.

Have you checked to see if someone else nearby has started using the same WiFi channels?  Did you check if the FritzBox has had its WiFi enabled somehow due to the update?

Have you tried factory resetting the Airport Extremes?

Also, do you have any switches between the Fritz box and the airport extreme?

If so try testing around it. If not try adding one in.

On the airport Extremes try manually setting the ethernet ports to be 1Gbps/full duplex.

Have you checked that all your devices are on the same subnet and that the subnet mask is also correct on all devices? As AFAIK fritz boxes use the 192.168.178.x subnet which will often conflict with other devices. Also if you have an android phone. Dowland Fing. And use it to discover what devices are on your network it should be able to see everything.

Yes. All thre Airport Extremes have their router set to "off" which puts them in bridging mode. So they are all being assigned an IP address from the FRITZ!Box in the 192.168.178.xx range. The subnet is the same.
Nothing as changed on the Airport Extremes at all since they were working successfully. The only variable in the mix that has changed is the firmware of the FRITZ!Box, which I appear to be stuck with.

Yes, I have factory reset one unit but as I would expect, there has been no change.

We do have a switch, but it is connected directly to the FRITZ!Box in the office, so it's not in the link in any way between any of the Airport Extremes. It's an interesting idea, I'll try to connect one of the Extremes to that switch, rather than directly into the FRITZ to see if that makes a difference.
To the best of my knowledge, there's no UI allowing you to set the speed of the Ethernet ports on the Airport Extreme. And they've been working fine for many months.
But the switch idea does give me something new to try in the morning.

Since I know people have been up at night waiting for the next installment in this thread :)...today I switched over to Bigpipe, connected one of the Airport Extremes directly to the ONT, and we're back in business with the proper speed.
Now that I'm no longer with 2Degrees, if there's a way of getting their custom settings off the Fritz!Box so I can try downgrading my router to the previous firmware, I'd like to learn about it, but for now the set-up with the Airport Extremes is meeting my needs.

Well 2degrees settings on the Fritz box don't stop you from downgrading as far as I know, it's usually the manufacturer disallowing downgrades.

They have the downgrade procedures on the manufacturers website.

I don't really see any point in you downgrading now since you have already switched providers.

Also you don't need to remove the ISP settings as they do not restrict your use of the Fritz box (at least for 2degrees anyway).

As I said in my original post, 2Degrees have confirmed to me that because they've installed custom settings, it's not possible to downgrade. I also searched Geekzone when researching my issue, and have seen others make reference to this, including quoting a message from the manufacturer.
Yes, AVM publish very detailed instructions, but you can't follow them if custom settings are installed. If you try, you get an error when you attempt to install the older firmware.
I'd like to have a clean Fritz!Box because if I ever switch back to an ISP that requires VLAN tagging, I'd like to use it again.

There is a procedure for completely resetting and reinstalling a FritzBox - I used it to ensure that the 7390 I gor on TradeMe had a clean system.  You have to download the "recovery image" from the AVM FTP site and follow the procedure in its documentation.  For a 7390, this is here:

you can always downgrade fritz's unless they change the bootloader, then your only way is to flash it back. 

Using the downgrade tool will sort you.

If you are after a older version than the recovery image, i should still have 6.0 and pre 6.0 Images.
