In last 2 or 3 days, I notice my adsl speed is slower than usual, speedtest shows download 5.20Mbps, upload 0.72Mbps, ping 6ms.

I used to be able to download around 1MB/sec max, but its about half now, 2degrees network status shows no known issues. I've also tried restart router, still the same. Anyone else experience the same?

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

  • you have reset your modem and router
  • your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing - you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap
  • your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing
  • you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

  • Your ISP and plan
  • Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)
  • Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)
  • Your general location (or street)
  • If you are rural or urban
  • If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin
  • If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service
  • If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

please read then provide as much information as you can

the more info you could provide the more people can help

ADSL2

Auckland, Birkenhead area. (Urban)

I've done the test from above link, not exactly sure if I did right, I'm hearing static noise on phone.

Try to call 2degrees on Saturday afternoon, on hold for a long time, no one can answer my call :/

Status showing from my modem:

SNR Down 16.6 dB SNR Up 13.2 dB Line Attenuation Down 20.5 dB Line Attenuation Up 12.5 dB Path Mode FastPath Data Rate Down 6219 kbps Data Rate Up 852 kbps MAX Rate Down 7904 kbps MAX Rate Up 841 kbps

There's a physical fault with your line. The SNR sitting at over 16dB, rather than 12dB suggests whatever the problem is, it is coming and going and causing the line to re-sync.

The sync rate is also poor for the attenuation (line length).

Statistically, this is most likely to be a problem with your home wiring, rather than in the Chorus network. Start by looking at isolation testing by removing as many things from the picture as you can - each time, restart the modem and check what the downstream sync rate is.

My parents had a fault with their line. They were on ADSL and the download speed was about 1mbit. There was a cabinet at the end of their street maybe 200m away. I knew there must have been fault because when I was younger and I lived there we had ADSL1 I had a near perfect line. My parents had no idea and just constantly moaned about how their computer was soo slow and had to download updates all the time. I eventually looked into it properly and was surprised to find they would get about 1mbit down in a speedtest.

They got a tech out, and got it rectified. Download was about 20mbit after the tech fixed the line. (about 6 months after that they got UFB) :P

You should be able to get about 8-10mbit at least once its fixed. But as my old mate @michaelmurfy said get a master filter fitted, but even better...... I think a lot of Birkenhead can get UFB now. So ask your ISP if you can get that instead. Most ISP's are offering either a 30/10mbit or a 100/20mbit plan for approximately the same price as ADSL and its significantly better than copper.

Actually large parts of Birkenhead/Birkdale/Beach Haven can't get UFB. I'm lucky where I am that I can get it - 100m up the road, the rollout stops abruptly (for now).

I still need to try other phone jacks, little hope for this tho.

I'm in a situation where I have 5 months contract left, and plan to have UFB with another isp(luckily UFB is available in my area), so if I can't fix it myself, I'll just have to suffer for the next few months till contract is over, don't feel like to pay $150 for something I'll no longer need in 5 months time.

Anyways, I'll call 2degrees again on Monday, see if they can help out.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

what you should do is order UFB now, it could potentially take that long to get installed if you are in a MDU.

but defiantly order UFB well before your contract is up, and keep your ADSL line in the mean time

MDU?

Really? take months for chorus to install?

MDU, Multi Dwelling Unit, or something with a shared driveway. if you are a single house with its own drive then its normally up to 3 months to install fibre, but can be a little longer. MDU's can be a bit longer and its not unhear of to take longer than 6 months

Installing fibre and maintaining a massive network is not easy/quick

MDU = Multiple Dwelling Unit

Yes, really.  Depends on your location and the alignment of the planets.  wink

Really.  In a multiple dwelling unit or up a right-of-way, getting all the permissions from the other owners and interested parties to do the connection can be a nightmare, and 5 months is not a bad estimate for how long it takes for that plus getting Chorus to design the connection and then actually get around to doing it.  It certainly took that long for me on a right-of-way.

especially as you are in a chorus area...... most other LFC's are half that at the worst!
