I'm going roaming in a few weeks and I'm wondering what to do with my voicemail. I don't intend to actually use my phone (so no roaming pack) but I guess I'll be happy to receive texts (free, right?) and use it on wifi etc.

I don't use 2degrees voicemail even at home, but forward all missed calls to a different number (via phone call forwarding menus).

This page says voicemail is deactivated when roaming, to avoid the inbound/outbound charges I guess. It says if you "divert all your calls to Voicemail" that "you will not incur any charges". Is it the same if I forward all calls to my different number? I have heaps of minutes here so I don't have an issue with using them, I just don't want any unexpected roaming charges.

What type of handset do you have? Wi-Fi calling works awesome when roaming used it loads around the world = Free roaming

Once upon a time, setting call forwards from your handset could generate a diverted call charge at whatever your plan rate was; for roaming this could have gotten big, fast. I dont know if modern mobile plans have addressed this behaviour; I turned my voicemail box off ages ago and have a stock message asking people to text me.

The instructions on 2Degrees page set the divert at a different point in the call; the core switch will autoroute any calls to the local voicemail platform, rather than bouncing out via the interconnects trying to resolve the call forward.

I do agree with John though, Wifi calling is very good (assuming you've got good wifi!) and calls are processed as if you are in country (eg dial area code+number).

Yep, that's what I was planning (Call forwarding: Always forward, on my phone). I have a Nokia 7 Plus, doesn't seem like I have the option of wifi calling. I will have my other phone on a local sim or roaming so I'm not too worried, just don't want to rack up charges on my main phone.

I guess that's what I thought I asked. I want to be sure that forwarding all calls (with whatever method) means no roaming charges. I know that when I forward missed calls now, it takes minutes off my plan but that's no problem. I also think that if I kept this setup I would incur roaming charges if a call went to voicemail (which I do not want).

2degrees suggest **21*22202200**# to divert all calls to voicemail (and not incur charges). Is that any different to using my phones menu and forwarding all calls to 0222022000 (is that code a typo, missing the last 0, in the 2degrees page I wonder?). And does the same apply to **21*211234567**# (i.e. no roaming charges, just whatever I would normally pay/pack charge) and/or CFU via phone menu? John would suggest so, and he seems to know his stuff.
