I've spent the last 24 hours trying to find a solution. Paid $125 to Netgear support, only to be told to update my firmware. And topics on here are kind of similar but not quite, and haven't found a solution as of yet.

So, switched to Orcon this week. Gigantic plan, 900 d / 400 u. On my main workstation (iMac) I'm only yielding 50-70mbs down / 500mbs+ u.

R7000p connected to the ONT.
Running firmware up-to-date as of 29/07/2020 - V1.3.2.124_10.1.64
My iMac desktop is connected to the R7000p via ethernet cable.
DHCP connection.
VLAN ID 10, priority 0.
IPv6.
QoS disabled.
Tried Cable switches on both ends. 
R7000p has been factory restored multiple times.

Speedtests via nighthawk app are 300mbs+ d / 300mbs+ u
Speedtest via Xbox one is 280mbs d / 58mbs u (would love the 500 here TBH)

Is there anything I'm missing that may be limited it to my workstation. It's driving me insane. And the so-called 'Gearheads' offered zero help in going over the settings. 

Hopefully I've covered all the info there, any help much appreciated.

Have you tried the Orcon supplied router (guessing you got one?) - if you have a nosey around here, there are multiple threads on how not awesome the expensive store bought routers can be - nighthawkes included.

No, I didn't get the supplied one. I'd been using the R7000p on my previous ISP connection (2Degrees) with greater results than the supplied router. The only variable since changing ISP is the ISP (Orcon) and it's very disappointing that neither Orcon - who won't offer support on customer-provided equipment, or Netgear who didn't go over any settings or troubleshooting - apart from restarts and firmware.

Think of this for a second - how many routers are out there in the market? It is impossible for them to support any router apart from ones they provide. You need to use an ISP's router to gain any support.

 

Also, the R7000p is quite an old router these days and its performance is pretty bad too. Just like most consumer grade routers (yes, even those $800 Wireless AX routers) really don't perform well on Gigabit. You need to either use your providers router, or go with something like the Cambium R195W (Link) that outperforms most consumer grade routers in price and can route Gigabit without breaking a sweat. Read the router guide in my signature if you want more information.

 

You're not going to really see full speed Gigabit on the R7000p I'm afraid - and even if you do change settings to get a Speedtest at Gigabit speeds, this doesn't mean you'll be able to fully use it as it chokes with routing multiple streams.

I'm with NOW and had the same problem and was told by the Tech that my Nighthawk was the problem so installed their Netcomm and despite many bad reviews found instant Upload download increase to what the 900/400 should have been the wifi was pretty good too (2 storey house)I have now installed the Asus  AC68U which has been great good speeds using ethernet  connection and better wifi  than the Netcom  but to be quite honest I could have stayed with the Netcomm NF18ACV router and saved my money,both were stable routers in my opinion

Thanks so much for getting back to me. I totally know and understand why ISPs don't offer support with anything other than their supplied router. But it is seriously the first time an agent has been less than forthcoming in troubleshooting and checking the setting with me.

The R7000p has been a serious upgrade on the supplied router from 2Degrees, so I don't regret it int hat respect. So thanks for the recommendation of the Cambium router, I'll order that now and respond if I get better results. It looks like good value on a spec to cost basis.

Cheers for responding, that sounds about right to me too. It was such a disappointment to leave what I thought was a shambles of a provider with 2Degrees (however I've only been paying $69 for 100/20 for the last 2 years - hence staying) only do receive a poorer experience.

But from what the above user suggested, it's the router. Thankfully it was a PBTech Xmas sale pick-up that served me well to get out of the fritz box. So it wasn't all lost money.

you router was likely more than capible of delivering you full speed on your old 100/20 plan. but with the upgrade to gigabit it just cant.

 

Time to look for a router that can.

You've missed the very obvious variable of asking the router to handle a connection ten times faster!

No dice on this recommendation so far. Exactly the same speed, knocking the ball back to Orcon. Cheers.

Ehternet always. Mentioned in the initial post rundown. At this point it seems well justified to put the ball back into Orcons court. By all account and review this new router should be able to handle UFB handily - but it's possibly running even slower than the R7000p at the moment.

Can you test on a different PC to rule out the iMAC network adapter. The XBOX wont give a super accurate test either.

 

The r7000 makes for an average access point at best 🤷‍♂️ (over rated, under engineered and marketed at "gamers")

The Xbox "Speedtest" won't show much more than 200Mbit - both of mine don't, and I have an over-engineered network.

 

Regarding your PC - use the Speedtest app, and not the in-browser app.

 

The new router is far more capable than your old one. Ensure it's firmware is also updated.
