On Spark/Vodafone - this seemed to be a free service, I was able to receive text messages whilst overseas even with roaming off (on Spark I was still paying for the plan since I wasn't away for more than a month), I could have sworn this was true in the past with 2degrees, but their customer service advised you cannot unless you pay $8 per day for roaming.

Anyone able to confirm?

Recently went to Aus for a week. Can tell you that you can receive SMS with Wifi calling enabled as we tried it. Didnt want to spend the $8/day - especially when you can get a AU$7/week sim which is what we did.

Roaming off not possible to attach to a network to get incoming SMS....

Attach to WiFi and enable Wi-Fi calling

You can receive normal SMS messages whilst roaming without incurring the $8 charge. Normal person-to-person messages don't even hit the charging system on the B-leg.

This does not apply to premium SMS though - those will trigger it.

Thanks y'all for the quick replies!

I've found specifically in the past that receiving verification text's didn't seem to be an issue even when I had roaming off - but would that now count as "premium SMS" in most cases? (bank text verification, realme etc)

Yes, those kinds of messages will trigger it. Even though they are free, they are charged - just, at 0c, normally.

How are you turning off roaming or do you mean just turning off data roaming on your Handset?

@Linux I just meant turning off the data roaming.

@SaltyNZ - thanks for clarifying that, I guess some of the verification services didn't use premium SMS in the past so I've received verification codes - that being said, i wonder if Spark/Vodafone charge the same way?

Turning off data roaming would not stop incoming SMS only the use of mobile data

Yes Spark and Vodafone bill the same way

Connect to WiFi calling for when you need the incoming SMS and then no roaming bill at all
