Slow speeds, my plan or something else?

ahh what happend there?

will try again, i have been living with some family for a while now, and have had enough of the slow internet, was wondering if what was the type of plan they are on but i would still think it would be faster than this? any ideas?

vodafone gives me:

my modem is a 3com 3crwe754g72-a

and the stats i can find on that are:

A downstream sync rate of exactly 4000 kbps, although not outside the ballpark for an attenuation of 45 dB, does suggest that it has been fixed at that rate by the port configuration at the exchange (although I've never seen 4000 used... 4128 would be more common). That would in turn be suggestive of an old plan... though a 256/128 plan seems unlikely (I doubt that Orcon would still be supporting such a plan)... but any problems that develop on legacy plans are less likely to be addressed by an ISP.

Find out exactly what plan they're on. If it is a Max/128 plan, then something's definitely awry and you should contact Orcon support. If it's a legacy plan, it may be best just to change to a new plan like Orcon Purple.

hey Ilmarin cheers, yeah just did some more digging and it turns out there still on a 256/128 plan, i didn't think this would be case i cant find that type of plan on the orcon website. unless its rural broadband, like yourself i am surprised these still exist. yeah i think i might be talking to them latter and politely tell them to change haha

from those stats could you guess what type of speeds we should see once we change over?

Your unconstrained sync rate would probably be in the region of 4500 to 5500 kbps, depending on line quality (noise level), and assuming a noise margin of 12 dB. Whether it's G.DMT or ADSL2+ modulation wouldn't make much difference. National performance should be bound only by your sync rate, but international on Orcon is seldom much better than 4000 kbps, and during peak times is typically in the 1500-2500 kbps region (at least for me, on a regular Orcon plan).
