Hi,

As the title suggests, could the low upload speeds (0.06MB/S on LA server with Speedtest.net) be causing the fact I cannot upload *.jpgs to online image hosting sites without being corrupted? I have tried two different hosting sites: both have similar quality.

Or, could it be something to do with my PC? Not sure where to start? Thanks.

I have had submissions to a site get corrupted as well recently. On downloading and looking at the file, a chunk of it was repeated in the file over the top of what should have been there.

Yes - 0.06mbit/s is slightly faster than dialup. If you want to send a 1MB jpg file, thats over 2 mins to send the file.
The slow upload speed is probably also caused by your modem slowing down due to corrupted packets not reaching the destination / exchange.

Thanks. The images I am attempting to upload are below 500kb. So, what can be done about it?

Also, a number of the images I uploaded were when I was still on dial-up.

I would look at two things
- the compression codec used. Open the images in paint on another computer, re-save them and then try uploading. It could be a 3rd party codec on your computer that is interfering with the compression when the file is saved.
- Try to sort out why your upload speed is so slow.
What is your download speed, and can you do a test to a local nz server rather than overseas?
If you dont know how to access your view your sync speeds within your modem, a nz server will give us a more accurate speed test.

OK. Tried resaving *.jpg image in paint from another PC connected via ISC. No go: still corrupted.

Here are the results of my latest speedtest from Slingshot's homepage:

Firewall check:
TCP & UDP to server = open
TCP to client = closed
UDP to client = open

30ms latency
0ms   jitter

2% packet loss of 100 packets sent

13.77 mbps download speed
0.06mbps upload speed

There is obviously an issue somewhere. I will confirm with my ISP if it is at their end. Might try reconfiguring my router.  I don't see how it could be within my OS as I reimaged back to an image from some 4 months ago & the system worked fine, then.

It appears they are doing upgrade work at the Blockhouse Bay exchange, which the ISP tech said could interrupt the speeds. Why the download one doesn't appear to be affected is not clear.

I have noticed that pages have been taking longer to load in recent weeks, guess this could have been the issue.
Will give it a week or so. YellFrown

Do you know how far away you are from the telephone exchange?
That 2% packet loss of 100 packets sent is what would be causing problems.

From here, open a command prompt
- Type ipconfig and press enter
Note down your gateway address - you may have to scroll back up to see it.
- Type cls and press enter to clear the command screen
- Type ping gatewayaddress -n 200 and press enter
eg ping 192.168.1.1 -n 200
It will begin to ping your modem. When it is finished after about 220 seconds, note the %loss that appears in the results.
If it is 0 % then we know that your connection to the modem is ok and it is not your ethernet cable.

- Type cls again to clear the screen
- Type ping speedtest.slingshot.co.nz -n 200
Again it will take about 220 seconds to test the connection between your computer and slingshot's head office. When its finished, you should see that 2% loss like you saw in your speedtest, or a % above 0.
if you do see some loss, then
- try another modem if you can
- wait for the exchange upgrades to be completed.
- have a line check done to check the quality of your line.
A simple way to do this is to call 0800-000-000 from a corded telephone and see if you can hear any hissing / clicking / windy sounds in the background while the recorded woman reads out the time and options. If you do then we know the problem. It could still be a line fault even if you dont hear the noise but this is a quick way to skip a bunch of other tests.

Everything appears back to normal. Can now upload images without corruption. Did seedtest & upload speed rated & 854kbps with zero packet loss. I guess they have completed their upgrades. Wasn't aware the ISP support could determine issues like that. Probably should have called them first off. Thanks for the replies.

Same problem. Mt Albert Area. I have been experiencing slow or completely fail upload attempts due to packet data lost since the end of Dec 2009. Pictures uploaded to Picasa Web Albums get corrupted. SMTP connections to gmail, yahoo fail due data corruption and not stable upload. Refused SSL connections from diferent servers from time to time because of the corrupted packets :(

Pinging speedtest.slingshot.co.nz [202.180.66.220] with 32 bytes of data:

Upload speed is still 0.04 Mbs on 0.128 Mbps upload plan.... Just been told by the Slingshot Tech Support that it is a known issue with Blockhouse Bay and Mt Albert area networks and Vodafone is working on that problem. Unfortunately, they have no idea how long it would take to solve this...So far, not so good.. Can't  update my web albums or email attachments..Everything on upload gets corrupted :(

I've managed to find an update on the issue:

"There was a delay in the implementation of the design. It has been rescheduled to be implemented tonight at 23:59."

Apologies for the inconvenience this has caused.

We will be reviewing compensation once it's been confirmed as fixed.

Unfortunately the work didnt go as planned.

Mt Albert customers on the Next Big Thing are still effected. The issues for Blockhouse Bay customers have been resolved.

Will post more updates as I get them.

Another update, bit more positive this time :)

"New circuit link has been set up and tested successfully with no errors. Engineers are going to migrate customers onto the new link tonight at 23:59. There will be a 30 minute outage while this takes place. Next update will be after the migration is complete."
