(Reader note this is not a ZOMG IT COST ME MONEY TO SEND A TEXT thread)

So I'm bound to not be the first one to notice but 2degrees Voicemail number and Westpac's Text Banking number are the same (202).

I dunno why I care but it is a little irritating that when I go to check my voicemail my contact for Westpac comes up, and frankly I'm quite surprised it doesn't cause a whole lot of conflicts.

Is there a different Westpac Text Banking number that I should be using, as it would be wonderful to have these two very different services separated.

If your phone supports speed dialling to voicemail, you could configure the long voicemail number (+64 22 202 2002) instead of using the shortcode 202.

Iamspark is right, that's one solution.

The conflict was noted at the time we set everything up, but we decided to go with it anyway as the number suits our branding (lots of 2s in the 022/2degrees branding for some reason...)

Sorry!

That seems like a poor decision to me - it's not some IQ quiz shortcode you took there, it's a freaking bank.  I would have thought you'd have taken the short code 222 or something more like it.

222 is already used for something else.

But so was 202?  I'm just not seeing why you chose to do  that - it's very confusing.

Exactly.

Don't blame me, I just build what I'm told. :-)

But in all seriousness: everything is a compromise and you are 100% guaranteed to annoy someone no matter what you do. By the time Westpac got on board with the premium SMS interconnect service (which was not till after launch IIRC) everything Voicemail-related was already cast in stone - hundreds of thousands of SIMs printed up and sent out, etc. etc. weeks before launch. Certainly no way it's going to change now...

FWIW there is now an informal arrangement that external parties will only use 4 digit shortcodes, and operators will use 3 digit shortcodes. However that still leaves a lot of services to be grandfathered in both ways, such as this one.
