I'm looking at some personal website hosting, anyone have a favourite? Just getting into some javascript and php and wanted to open up a live site to have a play around with.
Should I stick to looking at NZ hosters or go further abroad, advice is appreciated :)

Hosts in the US will be cheaper than in NZ. If you're just starting out, i'd suggest having a look at Dreamhost.

(Avoid godaddy for anything, see http://nodaddy.com/ )

+1 fcr Dreamhost - not the cheapest but defintely not the most expensive either. If you time it right (ie: US holidays), you can get a years hosting for around $15NZD.

Ive been with them for over a year now with no issues.

I have used http://byethost.com/index.php/free-hosting as a free host to test out stuff.

I used them for a short time, but found it frustrating that everytime I made a change to a PHP package I was testing, theyd take my site offline while it was "tested" for security holes etc. It could be down for upto 24hrs while this "testing" was performed.

Maybe theyve changed that policy.......

I like HostGator.com
fairly reasonable hosting. Cheap single user setups.

I use it for reselling, which is also reasonable & have offered web hosting for my work colleges & some friends for only $60 per year.

They have a ridiculous amount of online tech support people who pretty much help me every time I have an issue (usually resolvable myself, but had the rare occasion I actually needed them to fix something)

But there are always free web hosting solutions around (limited but still free).

Have you checked if you get free web hosting space with your ISP?

Be VERY careful with HostGator.

I used them back when i started web hosting, they terminated my account without warning because they thought i was using it to spam people.

Turned out it was a different account when i got in touch with them, but for me to get activated again they wanted a scan of my photo id (to provide i was real) and all the money they had refunded me back (no compensation etc). The support guy agreed with me in saying that they were in the wrong, but they still insisted in these steps. So all my sites were down with the "HostGator suspended" page up on them and i have to wait till they verify my photo id and pay them again. No thank you.

I left them straight away, never to return.

Most ISPs wont give PHP/SQL without extra cost being involved.

For NZ hosting how about Openhost - only $6.99 a month - Linux or Windows.

Go with NZ hosting (ie NZ servers) wherever possible as it will be much faster.
