Hi there

I have an S2 I9100T which I bought through Fair Buy. I think it's from Hong Kong. I wanted to upgrade it to ICS but Kies said that it could not automatically update my phone.

So I decided to root the device and flash ICS onto it. I flashed the following onto the device:
I9100TDOLP7_I9100TTNZLP3_I9100TDOLP4_HOME.tar.md5

And then used CF-Root to root it again.

If I do *#1234# I see the following:
PDA: I9100TDOLP7
PHONE: I9100TDOLP4
CSC: I9100TTNZLP3

I am on the Telecom XT network.

When I try to set up Software Update I tick the box to say I accept the T&Cs and then it says "Registering Device" and eventually "Processing Failed"

Any ideas how I can get this set up to get OTA software updates?

Thanks
Brett

Did you install a custom recovery (e.g. ClockworkMod)?  If so, the OTA process will fail. Sounds like there's something hinky going on with Samsung's server, though.

You've got the latest build, for what it's worth.

Edit: It might be a CSC mismatch error, what does it say when you type *#272*Device IMEI# into the dialler?

Edit #2: Forgot to mention, if you chance your CSC in this fashion you'll trigger a hard reset.

Thanks for your interest and help

When I type that into the dialler (using the IMEI number found under Settings/About Phone/Status) it says

Sales Code KOR

Oh - I do have CWM on my phone - it came as part of CF-Root ... so is that the problem?

Cheers
Brett

The answer is both.  You have a CSC mismatch, which is presumably preventing you from registering with the Samsung servers (your phone reports a KOR CSC, but your software is TNZ).  Even if you were to change your CSC to TNZ, an OTA update would download but not install due to CWM.  Flashing via KIES or Odin will be fine, though.

Thanks

Prior to flashing ICS I had KOR software and yet Kies still would not let me update, which is why I resorted to flashing the phone.

So do you think if I change the CSC to TNZ and remove CWM (which I would probably do by flashing the phone again but not rooting it with CF-Root) then I would be able to get the OTA updates?

I don't really need Root. I just wanted ICS on my phone, so this would work for me.

How can I change the CSC?

Thanks again for all your help

Brett

If you can't do it by entering the above code, then you'll need to find a multi-CSC firmware to flash.  The XEU (europe generic) firmware would be a fairly safe bet.

As I recall, you've always had CSC mismatch issues - your phone was reporting KOR CSC, but you had OZC (Hong Kong) software installed.

That being said, there's not much point as you have the latest TNZ firmware!  If you really wanted to simplify things then I'd look into flashing a multi-CSC XEU firmware (try here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278) and changing to XEU with the above code.  If you don't install CF-Root, then in theory you will be able to receive and install OTA updates.

If you want root and end up with CWM, it just means you have to connect to KIES for your firmware updates - it's not really that big of a deal.

Oh I seem to have missed something. (and when I scroll back up I see your "Edit 2" there now, I didn't see that before)

I'm not sure what code you mean when you say the "above code" to change the CSC

I entered *#272*Device IMEI#  in my phone before to see that the CSC was KOR

Can I somehow use the same code to change the CSC too?

Sorry if I am being dense. This is all very new to me.

Yes, but only if your firmware is multi-CSC which it isn't.  So your options are a) flash the TNZ CSC which I haven't come across, or b) flash a XEU firmware and CSC package using Odin then using the code I quoted to select the appropriate CSC.

Or, don't worry about it until the next TNZ firmware comes out and just flash that with Odin...

Thank you very much. That's great.

I'd quite like OTA to be working because I'm not involved enough in the community to know when new releases happen.

Thanks again for all your help. I really appreciate it.

CWM flashable ZIP with the TNZ CSC here.

Once you've flashed that, you'll want to reflash the firmware you downloaded via Odin and then do a factory reset.

There are also much easier and better ways to root now which don't include flashing an insecure kernel.

You can simply flash SuperSU and busybox from stock recovery, the file you need can be found here, just copy in to your MicroSD card, not the internal storage.

>> then do a factory reset

I'm assuming a factory reset will wipe my data/apps.  Do I need to be doing some sort of backup/restore before a factory reset, or will my apps find their way back on to the phone?

Seriously showing my n00b status here ;)

Yes a factory reset will wipe the device so you will need to install something like Titanium Backup.

Once you setup your phone again depending on the auto backup settings you used when you first configured your Google account should automagically download again. Or you can restore the backup from Titanium which will include the app data as well.

Note when restoring a system app (marked in red), restore only the data not app+data.
