The LG G7 has been announced, and for better or worse, I still think it's the best new phone for me, because (as far as I know) no other manufacturer does a wide angle rear camera - a feature I don't want to give up.

Supposedly it will be released in Korea in the next few days, with international markets to follow. Does anyone know when (if) it will be coming to NZ?

I presume PB Tech will be stocking it, like the V30? (Sorry I don't know how to tag NickT in this post)

I'm sure the G7 will be a great phone. But it's yet another phablet-sized android offering. If no good small-sized bezel-free androids in the next 12 months, I'll consider swapping to Apple.

the V30 was almost a great phone, but for the front camera. they might as well have not put one in.

Do you switch between the two ecosystems quite often? I have had Android devices for personal use and Apple for work. There's no way I could chop and change easily. My work phone drives me nuts, but to be fair, that's not necessarily Apple's fault, it's more the email client we use.

Apart for one year in 2013 when I was iPhone, I have been exclusively android. I want a quality phone, but I don't want a big phone. I was hoping that the move to bezel-free phones would see android manufacturers holding physical dimensions down, but they all seem to be doubling up and going bezel-free as well as bigger physical sizes. The Essential phone remains an option - perfect size for me - but it has performance issues and a dodgy camera. Anyway, gripe over, I shouldn't hijack the thread.

We sure will be ranging the G7. Stay tuned.

Big fan of the wide angle myself, the V30 is my daily driver.

The problem with the shift to taller aspect ratios is that it is all but impossible to compare on paper. A 6" phone at 16:9, 18:9, and 18.5:9/19.5:9 are vastly different sizes. The 6.1" G7 is quite a bit smaller than the 6" V30. G7 is more akin to the smaller S9 in footprint.

V30 is a phenomenal phone. Exceptional battery life, excellent performance, and one of the best-looking devices ever made IMO. Front camera isn't the best, but can produce great results in good lighting. Given how far down the list of features the front camera ranks for my personal and work use, I am unbothered.

I agree, the front camera is something I've never used in a phone. I might have a squizz at V30 vs G7 specs now.

V30 is a physically larger device with a significantly wider screen, and the screen tech is LG's POLED rather than the G7's IPS LCD. Both screens are 1440p with multiple HDR certifications, so they get pretty bright.

G7 has the newer Snapdragon 845 processor, smaller form factor, stereo speakers, upgraded cameras, and a few other bells and whistles. I like the width of the V30 for typing with both thumbs myself.

Local variants are dual SIM.

The iPhone 8 outsells the 8 plus, which shows a majority of Apple punters prefer the smaller handset - yet, for some unfathomable reason, Android manufacturers are all clambering on board with plus sizing and ignoring a significant market of users that want the smaller size.

The 4.7" iPhones outselling the Pluses is a function of price as well as form factor mate. The iPhone SE outsells the iPhone 8, but 4" is undesirably small for a significant portion of the market. The relationship between screen size and footprint is significant here too, as you can fit a 6" 18:9 screen (or even a 6" 16:9 screen!) in the footprint of the iPhones Plus.

G7 is only a smidgeon wider than the iPhone X, and as you note about ~ a centimetre and a half taller. It is comparable in footprint to the S8 and S9. S7 and Essential Phone are 16:9 so yes it will be taller.

The demand for smaller phones unfortunately does not extend to paying premium prices for them, which is why that market has largely died. People simply won't pay the same amount for a small phone as they will for a big phone of otherwise identical spec in any significant volume. The Xperia Compacts, for example, don't move in volume without serious price erosion, despite being tremendously good products. The reasoning is not unfathomable, it is based directly on sales data and focus testing.

I know the pain point of there being no product in market that meets my needs all too well and wish you luck.

Stereo, earpiece is used in conjunction with the bottom-firing speaker as has been standard since HTC first introduced it on the 10. Same deal as S9, iPhone 7/8/X, etcetera. The G7 also uses a small hollow space on the inside of the device to amplify bass when placed on a flat surface. The speakers are very very good.

That's my relationship with LG phones, first time G4 bootlooped... 2nd time Nexus 5X bootlooped. Never again.

LG know this, which is why they've rolled out 2 year warranties for G6 & V30, hopefully for the G7 as well. 2 year warranty is enough to give me comfort RE bootloop problems.
