So was watching SKY today and noticed them advertising a new movie channel. SM Classics is what it was called and will be on channel 33. Looks like an HD channel (Hopefully). Looks like a lot of the movies have been on either SM Greats and MGM. Hopefully they have some older films in HD.  Can't remember the release date.

Insofar as it's just a re-branding, it's just swapping one annoying logo smeared across the bottom corner of the screen for another annoying logo, and I couldn't care less.

The more interesting part of the announcement was that as part of the change they would also expand their film offering to include a wider range of material.

I like films, but MGM (and TCM) have such a small number of films on constant rotation that there is essentially no point in the channels, as pretty much anything coming on has already had a run of showings in the last nine months. It's the same limited range of films rotated over, and over, and over again. Introducing some new material that hasn't already screened a dozen times in the last year might mean there was a point to having/watching the channel.

The lack of new/interesting movies, and the ad/promo saturation bombing of otherwise interesting channels (cough, the Box, cough, History, cough) means I'm pretty close to cancelling. I've dropped sport, will likely shortly drop Rialto and the Movie package. It's only really SoHo that I watch.

As it is a new channel there will be a price rise. Oh that's right. They have done this years price rise already. I got the letter the other day.

/sarcasm

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

TCM here stands for Turner Crappy Movies.  TCM in the US leaves the one here for dead with content and presentation quality  like HD and 5.1 sound..

I'm wondering how they are going to set the difference between a "great" and a "classic"

Does anyone even watch TCM? Dump it and reduce the price of the movies package by 50c

+1.

Either that, or show some actual new content (or at least something that hasn't already been screened in the last 3 months).
