My brother unplugged it while it was on and now it wont work any more. When I plug it back in it looks like it starts up but then it starts making a weird noise, I also get no sound or picture. I have tried pressing the reset button for 5 seconds but that did nothing. This is on the Mysky HDi box.

Anyone have any ideas on how to fix it before I call Sky tomorrow?

No different to what happens in a power failure. Should start up again OK afterwards but may take a while to fully boot up. My Silver PACE Sky Box takes a long time (2 mins or more) to boot after powering off. If it doesn't work after a few minutes then call Sky.

Basically, if it hasn't started up yet then it's fried & you'll need to call them to replace it.
If it's fried then you'll have lost all your recordings and linked series.

We had the same situation about a year ago. Box powered down & wouldn't recover. Sky needed to replace.
If you've purchased it outright then your'e worse off. If you rent it then you should be OK for Sky to replace for free.

If it's a standard MySky HDi box try to swing an upgrade to a MySky+. The extra $10 per month is worth it for the extra capacity.
Their call centre is a bit slow on the up-sell.
It took a fair sh*load of explaining to convince them that if they're coming out to replace the box (at no cost) then surely they could upgrade without having to charge the MySky+ install fee. They eventually decided that because I was a long-standing customer they'd waive the fee.
You'd think if they had stock, of what is effectively the same box with a bigger HDD, then they'd use the initiative to do the "would you like fries with that?" up-sell.
If customer said no they'd get like-for-like, but if customer said yest then Sky would incur no extra installer cost in replacing the box and earn more revenue for the service.

This is incorrect! You cannot purchase a box outright, Sky always retain ownership whether you pay a one time fee or a monthly fee. You never own the box and sky will maintain/replace it regardless.

There was a time when the original My Sky box came out (Dec 2005) that you could purchase the box outright and pay a lowered content subscription.
I guess Sky canned that option when the boxes started to blow up or when the My Sky HDi (& later variant) was introduced.

Yes you paid a one time fee but you didn't own the box, never, ever. If you took this option and cancelled Sky you had to return the box to them.

Thanks for the clarification. Glad I never went for that option.


To cut it all short, basically if your Sky box dies and does not re-power then call them.
If it doesn't come back to life after following their over-the-phone instructions, then they'll send someone out to replace it.
If you've got a MySky box then you'll have lost all your recordings & will need to reprogram any series links into the new box.

I'm glad I went for that option. Had box well over 40 months, so would've paid a lot more then $600 in $15 a month rental charges for box, plus sky still responsable for replacing box if something goes wrong as they own it.

Agree with advice on fixing problem with above post.

Me too. Paid $600 back in '05. At $15/month, would be about $1600 by now, and if it goes crook, they fix :)

I got the box swapped out yesterday, the guy didn't even see what was wrong with it he just gave me a new box and took the old one.
